Women's Lacrosse Tops Union In NCAA Play

Middlebury went on an 8-0 second half run to pull away from Union and earn a 19-6 win over the Dutchwomen in NCAA Tournament play. The Panthers will take on Bowdoin, an 11-8 winner over Colby, in the NCAA Regional final at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The win was the 300th of her career for Middlebury head coach Missy Foote, who moves to 300-69-1 in her 25th year.

Middlebury jumped out to a 4-0 lead early behind three assists from Schuyler Winstead. Union scored three of the next four goals to make it a 5-3 game with 5:28 left to play in the first half. The Panthers added a pair of goals in the final five minutes to take a 7-3 advantage at the break.

Stephanie Cronan scored the first goal of the second half for Union, before the Panthers went on their decisive 8-0 run. Winstead had three goals during the run, while Amanda Smith added a pair to give Middlebury a 16-4 lead with 4:24 left to play. The teams each scored twice in the last 4:24 to make it a 19-6 final.

Winstead paced the Panthers with four goals and six assists for 10 points on the afternoon. Smith and Kim Walker scored three goals apiece in the win as Blair Bowie made six saves in goal.

Cronan led Union with three goals, while three other players had solo goals. Rachel Beckman made eight saves in 47 minutes, while Stephanie Burlton made one in 13 minutes of action.
