Baseball Drops Two vs. Bowdoin

Bowdoin took a pair of games from Middlebury (7-4, 8-2) in the final games of the season for the Polar Bears, who finish 20-14 The Panthers host Wesleyan in a doubleheader tomorrow, needing one win to clinch a NESCAC playoff spot. Wesleyan needs a sweep to earn a bid to the NESCAC tourney.

An RBI single by Bowdoin's Nick Lawler and an RBI double from Middlebury's Dev Talvadkar had the game tied at one after two innings. Middlebury took a 2-1 lead in the third before a two-run double by John Lawrie gave Bowdoin a 3-2 lead. The Polar Bears came back with three runs in the fifth, including an RBI double from Ricky LeClerc and a run scoring triple from Erik Morrison. The lead grew to 7-2 in the sixth before Middlebury scored a pair in the bottom of the inning. Ryan Whyte had an RBI single in the inning.

LeClerc earned the win with six innings of work, while Tom McMahon registered a save. John Lanahan took the loss for Middlebury, throwing four and a third innings. Jon Koperniak went 2-2 for Bowdoin on the day, while Talvadkar and Ryan Armstrong had two hits apiece for Middlebury.

Bowdoin scored two in the third and two more in the fourth to hold a 4-0 lead over Middlebury in game two. A solo homer from Andrew Pavoni of Middlebury put the Panthers on the board in the fourth inning. The Polar Bears added a run in the fifth, before taking a commanding 8-1 lead with three runs in the sixth. An RBI triple from Chris McCann, a run scoring double by Jared Lemieux and an RBI single from Lawler accounted for the runs. Middlebury ended the scoring with an RBI groundout by Liam Quinn in the bottom of the inning.

Mark Bulger earned the win for Bowdoin, tossing six innings, while Dave Irwin suffered his first loss of the season for Middlebury. McCann, Lawler, Lemiuex, Erik Morrison and Chris Bucci each had two hits for Bowdoin, while Jon Rosenthal drove in a pair. Pavoni, Quinn and David Riester each had two hits for the Panthers.
