Middlebury Advances To Regional Final

5/14/05 - Middlebury held Nazareth scoreless for the game's first 31:27 on its way to a 14-4 win over the Golden Flyers in an NCAA regional match-up in Vermont. The Panthers advance to the regional final on Sunday at 1:00, against the winner of the Bowdoin/Stevens game played later today.<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Claire Edelen gave Middlebury a 1-0 lead just 1:13 into the contest. <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Nazareth had some lengthy possessions early on, but were not able to muster up any quality shots. The Panthers made it a 2-0 game at 21:46 as Elizabeth Renehan found Channing Weymouth with a nice feed for the goal. Kim Walker struck for a pair of goals, before Weymouth converted a free position to make it 5-0 with 12:03 left in the first half. Michele Bergofsky scored at 10:08, while finding Renehan at 8:47 to increase the lead. Renehan struck again at 1:08, before Edelen scored on a free position with 50 seconds left in the half to give the Panthers a 9-0 lead at the break.

Amy O'Donnell put Nazareth on the board just 1:27 into the second half. Middlebury answered with three straight from Schuyler Winstead, Weymouth and Beth Seeley to make it a 12-1 game. Elizabeth Carney converted a free position shot for Nazareth at 11:30, while Beth Quartier followed at 9:05 to make it a 12-3 game. Walker scored her third of the game for the Panthers at 7:45, while Mimi Schatz ended Middlebury's scoring with a free position goal at the 5:25 mark. Allison Bayer scored the game's last goal at 3:53 to make it a 14-4 final.

Walker and Weymouth led Middlebury with three goals apiece, while Renehan and Edelen added two each. Four different players scored goals for Nazareth, who ends its season at 14-3.
