Men's Swimmers Finish Second At NESCACs

The Panther men's swimming and diving teams turned in a very impressive performance at the NESCAC Championships hosted by Wesleyan. Williams won the event with 1,862 points, followed by Middlebury (1,351), Amherst (1,264) and Tufts (1,133.5). The Panthers ended the meet with three individual champions, six school records and two NESCAC Championship meet records.

Sophomore Tim Lux (Sandy Hook, Conn.) dominated the breaststroke events, winning the 50 (26.52), 100 (57.66) and the 200 (2:07.16). His times in the 50 and 100 were new school records. Also earning a NESCAC title was sophomore Robert Collier (Catonsville, Md.) in the 100 fly, who set a new school record and NESCAC Championship meet record. Senior David Hawkins (Arlington, Va.) was the team's other winner, finishing first in the 50 fly with a time of 22.75, a new NESCAC Championship meet record.

Earning a pair of top finishes in other events was Collier, who qualified for the NCAA's with a time of 1:51.72 in the 200 IM, good for second place. He also finished in third place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.80. Placing second in the 50 breaststroke was first-year racer Peter Bell (Deerfield, Mass.) with a time of 26.69, while junior Alex Demas (Norwich, Vt.) came in second in the 100 breaststroke in 58.49. Junior Rob Hillas (Princeton, N.J.) earned a third place finish with a time of 9:43.42 in the 1000 free.

Middlebury's relay teams also fared well, as the 400 medley team comprised of Lux, Collier, Hawkins and senior Jason Korsmeyer (Weston, Mass.) set a new school record with a second place finish (3:25.51). Korsmeyer, Lux, Hawkins and sophomore John Rayburn (Washington, D.C.) combined to finish third in the 200 medley relay event with a time of 1:34.27. Finishing third with a time of 3:11.46 in the 400 free were Korsmeyer, Hawkins, Demas and first-year racer Robbie Burton (Oak Park, Ill.).

Middlebury head coach Peter Solomon was named the NESCAC Men's Coach of the Year at the meet.
