The Middlebury College swimming and diving teams hosted their first event of the season as they took on Springfield. The women came away with a 173-122 win, while the men were defeated 156-139.
Three Middlebury women each won two individual events on the afternoon. Sophomore Sara Cowie (N. Palm Beach, Fla.) won the 500 free in 5:13.28 and the 1,650 free in 17:39.36, while sophomore Pam Chatikavanij (Bangkok, Thailand) won the 50 free in 25.42 and the 100 free in 55.16. The Panthers other dual event winner was first-year swimmer Catherine Suppan (Burlington, Vt.), who won the 100 back in 10:0.67 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:28.03.
Sophomore Katie Chambers (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) was a victor in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.75), senior McKenna Moreau (Canton, N.Y.) won the 200 backstroke (2:12.56), sophomore Alanna Hanson (Golden Bridge, N.Y.) was a winner in three-meter diving (258.90), while first-year swimmer Libby Brush (Pittsford, N.Y.) won the 100 fly 1:01.42.
Also victorious was the 200 medley relay team comprised of Suppan, Chambers, Brush and Chatikavanij, who won the event in 1:52.88.
Two Middlebury men each won a pair events on the afternoon, while two relay teams were also victorious. Junior Tim Lux (Sandy Hook, Conn.) won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.40 and the 200 in 2:17.17, while rookie Zach Woods (Monroe, N.Y.) was a winner in the 200 back (2:01.17) and the 400 IM (4:20.30).
Woods, Lux, senior Alex Demas (Norwich, Vt.) and junior John Rayburn (Washington, D.C.) won the 200 medley relay race with a time of 1:39.61. The 200 free relay team comprised of Rayburn, sophomores Robbie Burton (Oak Park, Ill.) and Jake Pepper (Barrington, Ill.) along with first-year swimmer Will Clary (Atlanta, Ga.) won their event with a time of 1:29.84.
