Middlebury captured the 2005 PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout with a 3-2 win over Plattsburgh in Potsdam. The Panthers return to action on Friday when they host Southern Maine in the team's home-opener at 7:00 p.m.
Justin Gaines gave Middlebury a 1-0 lead just 5:05 into the contest, while Plattsburgh tied the game with a power play goal at 16:01. Evgeny Saidachev scored a shortie at the 3:06 mark of the second period, before the Cardinals tied it once again with 4:57 remaining in the second period. Rookie Jamie McKenna scored the game-winner for Middlebury at the 7:22 mark of the third period, as Middlebury hung on for the 3-2 win.
Ross Cherry made 21 saves in goal to earn the win, as Middlebury out shot Plattsburgh, 25-23 on the night.
Evgeny Saidachev was named the tournament's M.V.P., Kyle Koziara was its top rookie, while Gaines and Tom Maldonado earned all-tournament team honors.
