11/20/05 - Top-ranked Middlebury picked up a 4-2 win over second-ranked <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Plattsburgh to capture its own tournament in the Kenyon Arena. The Panthers move to 2-0 on the season, while the Cardinals drop to 7-1.
Middlebury scored the only goal of the first period as Annemarie Cellino made a pair of nice moves before scoring a shorthanded goal on a breakaway. The second period was a bizarre one with three shorthanded goals as well as a power play and four-on-four tally. Jenn Clarke started the scoring for Plattsburgh with a solid move on her way to a shorthanded breakaway tally. Emily Quizon answered with one for the Panthers before Daniel Blanchard slid a low shot past Middlebury goaltender Kate Kogut to make it a 2-2 game. Middlebury took a 3-2 lead at 11:09 as Shannon Sylvester found Abby Kurtz-Phelan with a nice cross-crease pass for a four-on-four goal. The Panthers took a two-goal lead at 12:51 as Molly Vitt scored the team's third shorthanded goal of the game. Neither team would score for the remainder of the period, leaving Middlebury with a 4-2 lead after two. The third period saw each team with power play opportunities, but neither would score, making it a 4-2 final.
Kogut made 17 saves in goal to earn the win, while Breanne Doyle made 23 stops for Plattsburgh.
