11/19/05 - In a rematch of the '05 NCAA Championship game, #1 Middlebury defeated #3 <?xml:namespace prefix = "st1" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Elmira 4-3 in the Middlebury Tournament held at the Kenyon Arena. The Panthers will take on Plattsburgh, a 3-2 winner over Williams, in the title game tomorrow at 5:00. Elmira meets Williams in the consolation game at 2:00.
Middlebury took a 1-0 lead the first period when Abby Kurtz-Phelan made a nice feed to Shannon Sylvester, who skated through the slot and backhanded a shot into the net. Elmira tied the game at the 14:51 mark as Farren Hart's shot from the left wing hit a Panther defender and knuckled into the net. The Soaring Eagles took a 2-1 lead at 18:35 as Kayla Coady's shot from the left side went in and out of the glove of Middlebury netminder Kate Kogut before trickling across the line.
Middlebury tied the game once again at 4:40 of the second period when Emily McNamara stuffed home a shot from down low. Elmira almost regained the lead at 10:35, but Kogut made a great save on a breakaway. The Soaring Eagles killed five other power plays in the period, before regaining the lead on Hart's second goal of the game with one minute remaining.
Middlebury tied the game 3:50 into the third period as Randi Dumont tipped in a shot from Sylvester, for her first career goal. Just 1:02 later, Emily Quizon scored the game-winner with a nice move on a breakaway for a short handed goal at 4:52. Elmira pulled its goaltender late, but could not get the equalizer.
Kogut made 12 saves in goal to earn the win, while Cara McGurry made stops for Elmira.
