Women's Lax Wins NCAA Regional

5/9/04 - Middlebury will make its 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA semifinals after a 20-6 win over Wheaton in an NCAA Regional Final on Kohn Field. The Panthers will meet NESCAC foe Amherst in the semifinals on May 15th at 2:30 on the campus of St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y. The winner will meet The College of N.J./Salisbury winner (11:30 a.m.) on Sunday at 1:00 for the NCAA title.

Middlebury jumped out early, taking a 3-0 lead over Wheaton in the game's first 4:56. Vanessa Pisano answered for the Lyons before Claire Edelen gave Middlebury a 4-2 lead with 21:32 left in the first half. The Panthers then went on a three-goal run, two from Nuala O'Donohoe, to take a 7-2 lead that held until the 8:27 mark when Wheaton answered. Two more late goals gave Middlebury a 9-3 advantage at the halftime break.

Middlebury opened the second half on a 4-0 run, three in the first 1:07 to give itself a comfortable lead at 12-3. Goals by Kate Weston and Anna Lombard cut the lead to 12-5 before the Panthers went on a 4-0 run to hold a 17-5 advantage with 13:15 remaining. Lombard scored her second of the game at 9:44, but Middlebury answered with a 3-0 burst to pick up the 20-6 win.

O'Donohoe and Schuyler Winstead led Middlebury with four goals apiece, while Michele Bergofsky had two goals and three assists. Beth Seeley chipped in with three goals, with Elizabeth Renehan scoed two and dished out two helpers. Pisano and Lombard led Wheaton with two goals apiece.

Sarah Grenert made four saves in the game for Middlebury, while A.J. Vasiliou made 18 stops for Wheaton. The Panthers out shot the Lyons, 45-6.
