The Middlebury women's soccer team converted a penalty kick goal in the 30th minute of Saturday's first half to secure a 1-0 victory over Amherst.

HIGHLIGHTS

• With 1:15 expired, Taya McClennen found Mia Feldman alone near the top of the box. The forward fired a bid that sailed just over the crossbar.
• Feldman tried her luck again about six minutes later with a low shot from 30 yards out. Mammoth goalie Molly Davidson tracked the ball and smothered it for the save.
• The Panthers nearly cashed in on a free kick in the 14th minute. Chloe Swindle stopped the feed from Stella Espinasse with her left foot and flipped a shot that pushed wide of the left post.
• The hosts cashed in 15:33 later. Noelle Mallory worked the ball to the right side of the box and fired a cross that hit an Amherst defender's hand for a penalty kick. Fiona Linnau stepped up to the dot and slid her shot into the lower right portion of the net.
• With 11:15 remaining in the opening half, Katie Peterson ripped a free kick that sailed near the center of the crossbar. Middlebury goalie Frankie Marston rose and punched the ball out of harm's way. Mandy Sutton guided the rebound to the top-left corner of the goal box, but the Panther defense crashed to block the bid.
• Peterson had a mirror-image chance about five minutes later, but Marston stood her ground again and knocked the ball over the bar.
• Swindle nearly doubled Middlebury's advantage with 3:13 gone in the second half, settling a bouncing ball and firing a low-angle bid near the left post. Davidson pulled the ball into her chest to deny the point-blank opportunity.
• The Mammoths put together consecutive chances in the 63rd minute. A quick restart free kick from Millie McLeod sailed toward the left side of the net. Marston pushed the ball away into a sea of purple and white. Maddy Varela won the battle for possession and lifted her rebound attempt over the woodwork.
• Varela tried again 11:31 later on a dead sprint shot from distance that looked destined for the left side of the net. Marston leapt off her line in time to deny the bid.
• Amherst pushed the envelope over the final minute, but a foul stopped the momentum as the navy and white bled out the final few ticks to seal the one-goal triumph.

NOTES

• Linnau's tally was her second of the campaign.
• Marston earned her fifth shoutout in a Panther uniform with six saves in net.
• The sides met for the 49th time with Middlebury logging their first victory over Amherst since 2018.

The Panthers return home for a Sunday conference showdown against Hamilton at 12:00 p.m.
