Late Goal Sends #9 Middlebury To 1-1 Draw With Vassar

The #9 Middlebury women's soccer team converted a penalty kick with 3:04 left in Sunday's second half to earn a 1-1 draw with Vassar at a windy Allan Dragone Track & Field Complex.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Brewers looked to get on the scoreboard 32 seconds into the opening stanza. Alice Crowley lofted a shot that was destined for the right side of the net, but Panther goalie Frankie Marston punched the bid wide of the post.
  • Seven minutes later, Noelle Mallory redirected a cross with her head that whizzed outside the left post. 
  • Vassar grabbed a 1-0 advantage with 15:38 expired. Elena Valle bent a corner kick that knuckled in the wind. Marston tipped with her right glove, but the ball found the back of the net.
  • The visitors nearly increased their lead 10 minutes later. Gianna Panarelli roped a bid from 20 yards that clanged off the right post.
  • Vassar continued to apply pressure, producing a chance in the 37th minute. Following a scramble in the box, a right-footed volley from Liv Ivie sailed over the crossbar.
  • The Panthers looked for the equalizer 5:37 into the second half. Mariana Rode looped a shot that rode the wind. Brewer goalie Laura Shea leapt and redirected wide of the right post.
  • Following a corner kick in the 64th minute, Vassar had a pair of premium chances. Ava Holman fired a right-footed volley that Marston sprawled out to deny. The rebound found the head of Ivie, whose bid hit the crossbar and bounced away to keep it a one-goal difference.
  • The hosts pressed for the leveling goal over the final minutes, cashing in following a Brewer foul with 3:04 left. Taya McClennen stepped to the dot, tucking her shot into the lower-right corner past a diving Shea to knot the contest at 1-1.
  • Neither side mustered a scoring opportunity to finish the contest with a draw.
NOTES
  • McClennen's goal was the first penalty kick of her career and her second tally of the weekend.
  • Marston posted a career-best seven saves in the draw.
  • Middlebury and Vassar played for the second time in women's soccer.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. contest at #19 Amherst.
