The Middlebury softball team closed out its final NESCAC road trip of the regular season on Sunday against Amherst. The navy and white logged an 8-6 win in the opener before the Mammoths snagged a 3-0 game two victory.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Lauren Ro led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and scored on a Panther miscue to give Amherst a 1-0 lead.
- A half inning later, Jen Westphal launched a solo home run over the left field wall, knotting the game at 1-1.
- The longball trend carried over to the bottom half, as Lulu Leppard uncorked a three-run roundtripper to right field to establish a 4-1 advantage for the Mammoths.
- Middlebury battled back in the third frame to tie the game at 4-4. A single by McKenna Lont and a base on balls from Kristyn Carroll put two runners on with one out. Three pitches later, Olivia Fleming brought home Lont with a single up the middle. Westphal knotted the contest in the next at-bat on a seeing-eye base knock that plated Carroll and Fleming.
- The Panthers grabbed the lead for good during the fourth inning. Olivia Scholes recorded a single up the middle to start the rally. Pinch runner Alison Jankowski stole second and third before Carroll blazed around the bases for an inside-the-park home run to right center, making the score 6-4.
- Amherst put runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom half, but reliever Emily Ye logged a flyout to right field to stop the scoring bid.
- Middlebury added two more to build an 8-4 lead two innings later. Sera Tokumaru worked a walk and stole second before advancing to third on an infield single by Scholes. Two pitches later, Lont plated Tokumaru on a single through the left side. Westphal added the eighth run on a groundout to second base.
- Leppard trimmed the Panther lead to two (8-6) with a two-RBI single up the middle during the sixth stanza. Amherst brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but pitcher Emily Dowd forced a pop out in foul territory to keep the advantage.
- The Mammoths had the final chance in the seventh. Samantha Portz was plunked and advanced to third on a wild pitch and groundout. Dowd slammed the door shut with a flyout to take game one.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury looked to open the scoring in the second frame. Reagan Adiletta pushed a single through the left side and Katelyn Mikros worked a four-pitch walk. Gwen Religa recorded a groundout to second base to keep the Panthers off the board.
- Briggs laced a one-out double into the right-center gap during the bottom half. Dowd held tough in the circle with consecutive swinging strikeouts to keep the tilt scoreless.
- The navy and white put two runners in scoring position an inning later. Carroll reached on a fielder's choice and stole second before making it to third on a passed ball. Fleming advanced to second after earning a free pass and swiping the bag, but a pop-up to second base quelled the scoring opportunity.
- Middlebury continued to manufacture chances. In the top of the fourth, Sarah LaFond tallied a lead-off base knock before Adiletta pushed her to third with a single through the left side. Religa again slammed the door via a strikeout and groundout.
- Amherst broke the seal a half inning later. Leppard commenced the inning with a bunt single and made it to third on back-to-back wild pitches. A Panther miscue allowed Leppard to cross the plate, and the Mammoths tacked on two more unearned runs to build a 3-0 edge.Â
- The hosts looked for more during their at-bats in the fifth, loading the bases with one out. Ye stepped in the circle and shut down the opportunity with a fielder's choice at home and a strikeout.
- Scholes provided a spark for the Panthers during their final plate appearances, splitting the left and center fielders with a two-bagger. Tokumaru came on to pinch run and later advanced to second on a one-out single by Carroll, but the Mammoths induced a fielder's choice to third and a strikeout to seal the 3-0 victory.Â
