#21 Men’s Tennis Rallies From 3-0 Deficit to Defeat #16 Amherst 4-3

The #21 Middlebury men's tennis team rallied from a 3-0 deficit, tallying four points in Saturday's singles play to secure a 4-3 come-from-behind victory at #16 Amherst.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The conference foes jockeyed for positioning in doubles action. The Mammoth duo of Andreas Sillaste and Lukas Frangenberg tallied a 6-0 decision at #1, while Julian Wu and Noah Lewis won 6-3 in the second slot. 
  • The Amherst pair of Albert Hu and Ronald Gualario clinched the doubles point via a 6-4 result in the third position.
  • Aldiyar Abzhan logged a 6-1, 7-5 decision at #4 and Chaidemenos won 6-4, 6-1 in the second slot to push the Mammoths to a 3-0 lead.
  • Thehan Wijemanne sparked the Panther comeback, shaking off a 6-1 opening-set loss with 7-5 and 6-2 results in the third position to put the navy and white on the board.
  • Anand Sahasrabudhe and Gualario went the distance at #6, splitting the first two frames. Sahasrabudhe held strong, closing out the battle via a 6-2 result to trim the Mammoth lead to 3-2.
  • The three-set theme continued in the fifth slot. Hugh Hentschel won a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 marathon, knotting the contest at three points apiece.
  • The attention turned to the top of the lineup, as Wu competed against Sillaste for the ultimate point. Sillaste grabbed the opener 6-3 before Wu matched via his 6-4 decision in the second set. The Panther kept the momentum, sealing the comeback with a 6-2 result.

NOTES

  • Wu logged his team-leading 16th singles victory of the campaign.
  • Middlebury and Amherst met for the 73rd time, with the Panthers having won each of the last seven battles dating back to 2019.

Middlebury closes its weekend road trip with a 12:00 p.m. contest on Sunday at Hamilton.
