The #12 Middlebury women's tennis team secured Sunday's initial three singles triumphs and five of the six tilts to finalize a 5-2 win over #20 Tufts.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Ellie Gershaw and Ryan Wuhrman put the Jumbos ahead in partnered play with a 6-4 win in the second flight. Alyssa Khou and Kyra McCandless matched that outcome in the #3 match to take the doubles point.
- In the top position, Anna Lardner and Elsie Van Wieren outlasted Brooklyn Bindas and Natalie Hu in an 8-6 tiebreaker to wrap up a 7-6 battle.
- The Panthers started with momentum in individual action. Van Wieren cruised in the top flight against Lucy Mitchell (6-3, 6-1), before Lardner gave the navy and white a 2-1 lead with her straight-set win over Rachel Cranley at #2 (6-4, 6-1).
- Charlotte McCann prevailed in a lengthy 7-5, 6-4 engagement against Athena Li in the fifth slot to extend the advantage.
- In the #3 matchup, Melanie Woodbury took the final Tufts tally during a three-frame thriller against Lulu Wu.
- Elizabeth Doak delivered a clincher for Middlebury in the sixth flight. After dropping a 6-2 opener against McCandless, the Panther rattled off 6-2 and 6-4 decisions to secure the team outcome.
- After coming up just short in a tiebreaker during the opening set, Ren Barton collected set scores of 6-3 and 6-1 to conclude the 5-2 win.
NOTES
- Van Wieren earned her 40th collegiate singles victory.
- Middlebury has won six straight and 16 of the last 17 matchups against the Jumbos.
The Panthers host #16 Amherst and Hamilton next weekend in the final home action of the regular season. Prior to Sunday's bout against the Continentals, the program will honor the contributions of its three senior members.
