Panthers Fall to Continentals in Series Finale

The Middlebury baseball team endured a 6-2 setback against Hamilton in Sunday's NESCAC West series finale.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Continentals pushed the initial run across in the home half of the first inning. Gianni DiCerbo earned a leadoff walk before moving up a bag on a single from Lucas Herman. DiCerbo gained a base on a flyout before scoring on a throwing error, nudging the hosts ahead 1-0.
  • In the bottom half, the Panthers matched the early score. Brayden Mathews punched a one-out base hit to center before a Will Ashley single placed runners on the corners. A passed ball allowed Mathews to dart home and level the battle at 1-1.
  • Herman reached on a fielder's choice before taking second on a wild pitch and sprinting home on a Middlebury miscue, making it a 2-1 ballgame through three frames.
  • Leading off the fourth, Anthony Pellagrini worked a base on balls and swiped second. Andrew Baay slapped a single up the middle to restore the tie at 2-2.
  • Ethan Righter and Alfonso Rada posted consecutive base hits before Chester Boynton coaxed a four-pitch pass to put a Hamilton runner on each base. DiCerbo delivered with a sacrifice fly to right that plated Righter for the go-ahead run, 3-2.
  • The hosts added an insurance tally in the seventh when Taylor Kaufman plated Herman on a single to center field.
  • Joe Basso laced a one-out double down the left-field line in the eighth inning, but Continental pitcher Mark Kovach induced a swinging strikeout to strand the Panther.
  • Matching RBI singles from Michael Tallarida and Noa Oyadomari in the eighth opened a four-run margin. Mark Kovach retired the side in order in the ninth to finalize his complete-game effort and the 6-2 decision.
