Middlebury Downed By Union 5-3

The Middlebury baseball team mounted a late comeback attempt on Wednesday against Union, but the visitors wiggled out of jams in the eighth and ninth innings for a 5-3 decision.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Garnet Chargers manufactured a run in the second without a hit. Andrew Keaveney drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a hit by pitch and advanced 90 feet from home on a sacrifice bunt. Keaveney scampered home on a groundout off the bat of Dennis Mulhearn for the 1-0 lead.
  • Union pushed across another tally during the third frame. Dylan Swarts singled up the middle, stole second and touched the plate via a base knock to center from Keaveney.
  • The Panthers sliced the deficit in half in the home portion. Dominick DeMatteo and Aiden Han recorded back-to-back singles. A batter later, DeMatteo scored on a sacrifice fly from Joe Basso to right center to make it 2-1.
  • Middlebury mustered a scoring chance in the fifth. Basso tallied a one-out base knock to center and ran to third on a Union throwing miscue. Garnet Charger reliever Ryan Calvario worked out of the jam with a pair of groundouts.
  • The visitors regained the two-run advantage an inning later. Brendan McCormick walked and moved to second via a sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, Jack McKillop ripped a single that found the grass in left to bring in McCormick for a 3-1 edge.
  • Union tacked on two more tallies in the seventh on a run-scoring base hit by Keaveney that pushed Swarts and Caleb Miller across home plate.
  • The home half of the eighth saw Brian Olson leg out a two-base hit and Pablo Spielman-Rodriguez poke a base knock. After Spielman-Rodriguez swiped second, Alexander Glasscock laced a double to drive in Olson. A Garnet Chargers throwing error allowed Spielman-Rodriguez to scamper home, pulling the Panthers within two (5-3).
  • Union tried to extend its lead in the next stanza, but pitcher Dylan Knightly came off the mound to field his position on a bunt attempt and kept Middlebury within a pair.
  • Basso bounced a seeing-eye single through the left side with one out in the last opportunity, but Swarts got a ground out and a strikeout with the tying run at the plate for the final 5-3 tally.

NOTES

  • Basso collected his third-straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Olson went 2-for-4 with a double and touched home once.
  • Spielman-Rodriguez finished with a career-high three stolen bases alongside his 2-for-3 effort with a run scored.
  • The programs met for the 88th time since 1890. Middlebury holds a 47-40-1 advantage in the series.

The Panthers jump back into NESCAC play with a three-game set at Wesleyan beginning on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
