Softball Halves Doubleheader Against Bowdoin

The Middlebury softball team dropped the opening contest of Saturday's doubleheader against Bowdoin by a 4-3 score in eight innings before rallying with a 4-2 triumph in the second contest.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Polar Bears pressured in the opening frame. Penelope Fong-Picariello drew a one-out base on balls and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Panther pitcher McKenna Lont fanned the ensuing batter and coaxed a groundout to third to shut the door.
  • The navy and white moved a runner within 60 feet in the home half. Kristyn Carroll recorded a leadoff single up the middle before Olivia Fleming moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt. Carroll made it to third on a grounder to second. Bowdoin starter Maddie Current induced a groundout to herself, ending the frame.
  • Bowdoin loaded the bases with nobody out in the second. Maddie Paschke pushed a base knock through the left side before a walk and a Panther miscue put a Polar Bear on each base. Lont clamped down, popping up the next two batters and tallying a groundout to escape the jam.
  • Pinch-hitting in the bottom of the third, Sarah LaFond reached on a Bowdoin error and came around to score on a triple to left-center field by Carroll. Fleming legged out a bunt single to plate Carroll and give Middlebury a 2-0 edge.
  • The guests rallied to take a 3-2 lead during the fifth. Fong-Picariello pushed Anika Ewert across with a single to center for the first Polar Bear run before swiping second and dashing home on a Sammie Wright base hit. Paschke doubled in Wright two batters later for the go-ahead run.
  • Carroll helped the Panthers knot the contest in the bottom half, singling up the middle and swiping second and third. Jen Westphal allowed her to score on a well-struck base knock to third, restoring the deadlock at 3-3.
  • Middlebury again saw Carroll reach third base with one away in the seventh, but reliever Kathleen Hester worked a pair of flyouts to send the opener to extra innings.
  • Chloe Garcia led off the top of the eighth with a two-bagger down the right-field line. Elise Siciliano advanced pinch-runner Ella Davies to third. Fong-Picariello tallied the decisive hit, finding a gap in right to bring Davies home and establish a 4-3 advantage that Hester preserved in the bottom half to secure the win.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
  • After two scoreless sessions, Ewert rounded the bases on a throwing error that trickled to right field, granting Bowdoin a 1-0 lead.
  • The navy and white heated up in the fourth, bringing four runs across to make it a 4-1 ballgame. With Carroll and Fleming in scoring position, Westphal powered an RBI base hit to left that scored Carroll. Westphal followed by stealing second, buying time for Fleming to scamper home. A two-run double from Lont plated Westphal and Reagan Adiletta, finalizing the frame's output.
  • Baylie Wong trimmed the deficit to two (4-2) in the fifth inning, dealing a base hit to left field that allowed Elise Siciliano to score from third.
  • Emily Dowd blanked Bowdoin over the final two innings to seal the 4-2 victory in game two and the split.
NOTES
  • With her eighth triple of the campaign in game one, Carroll became the program's single-season leader in triples. She surpassed Middlebury Athletics Hall of Famer Jessa Hoffman's total of seven in 2011. The senior enjoyed a 5-for-7 day at the plate with three runs scored and one driven in.
  • Dowd surrendered one earned run over seven frames, earning her team-leading eighth victory and sixth complete-game effort of the year in game two.
  • Lont worked all eight innings of the initial matchup, marking the fifth time she has gone the distance. She matched Westphal for the lead in RBI across the two games with two.
  • The Panthers own a 5-1 record in NESCAC play after Saturday's action, marking the squad's best start in league competition since a 7-1 start during the 2014 campaign.
  • Each side has claimed 11 matchups in the all-time series. Middlebury has prevailed in five of the last seven meetings.
The Panthers square off with Bates in doubleheader action on Sunday, set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
