Solid Singles Play Gives #18 Men’s Tennis 6-1 Win Over Trinity

The 18th-ranked Middlebury men's tennis team returned to the win column, claiming five of Saturday's six singles matches to propel the visitors to a 6-1 win at Trinity.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Julian Wu and Noah Lewis pushed the Panthers ahead in the #1 doubles match, besting John Pope and Brandon Felcher by a 6-3 score. Maxim Golubenko and Luca Garbati penned the Bantam response with a 6-4 win in the second flight.
  • In the decisive third pairing, Andrew Yim and Hugh Hentschel outlasted Thompson Brown and Andrew Nelson for a 6-4 victory to secure the initial point.
  • Thehan Wijemanne was the first to prevail in singles play, surrendering just one game in each set at #3 against Kauffman (6-1, 6-1). Yim followed in the fifth flight, dispatching Rico Buoro in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) to increase Middlebury's lead to 3-0.
  • Nikky Kondamuri put the match away at #6, fending off Andrew Nelson with scores of 6-0 and 6-4 decisions to secure the triumph. Wu followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory in the top slot.
  • After Pope grabbed the lone Trinity point at #2, Hentschel endured a battle with Golubenko in the fourth spot. The Bantam claimed the opener by a 6-3 score before Hentschel leveled the match with a 6-4 effort. The Panther grinded out a 10-4 superbreaker win to finalize the 6-1 team outcome.
NOTES
  • Wu collected his 60th career doubles win.
  • The programs met for the 28th matchup. Middlebury holds a 22-6 advantage in the all-time series and has taken the last 20 meetings.
The Panthers return to Vermont to square off with #2 Tufts on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
