Early Production Propels Baseball to 16-6 Victory Over VTSU Lyndon

The Middlebury baseball team collected 11 runs across the second, third and fourth innings to seal a 16-6 victory over Vermont State University Lyndon in seven innings on Wednesday.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Hornets grabbed a 1-0 lead in their first round of at-bats. Cesar Cisneros blasted a triple to right-center field and came home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ryan Alt.
  • Lyndon extended its advantage a frame later, pushing three across to make it 4-0. Carter Paquette highlighted the spurt by plating two on a double to right center.
  • Middlebury chipped away at the deficit during the home half of the second. After the first three batters reached base, Anthony Pellagrini brought home Sam Gersch and Carter Chi on a double down the left-field line. A batter later, Brayden Mathews lifted a sacrifice fly to right that sliced the margin to 4-3.
  • The Panthers grabbed their first lead in the third. After Henry Ayers and Joe Basso worked consecutive walks, Gersch belted a three-run homer over the right-center wall, giving the navy and white a 6-4 advantage.
  • Lyndon battled back as Jeren Harrison lifted a solo roundtripper to left and Aaron LeFrancois scored on a Middlebury miscue to knot the contest at six.
  • The hosts kept the scoring trend alive, adding five to retake an 11-6 lead. Basso and Pellagrini paced the surge with matching RBI doubles into left field.
  • Brian Olson pushed the Panther lead to eight (14-6) on a three-run homer to right center two frames later.
  • The Hornets put runners on the corners with two outs in the seventh, but Reed Hyde induced a strikeout and a popout to get out of the jam.
  • Chi sealed the contest in the bottom half, plating Pablo Spielman-Rodriguez and Alexander Glasscock with a double that bounced off the left-field wall for the 16-6 final.

NOTES

  • Gersch and Pellagrini each went 2-for-3 and plated four runs.
  • Mathews tallied a season-best five assists at third base.
