Down 3-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth of Friday's NESCAC West opener, the Middlebury baseball team ripped off three runs to steal a 4-3 victory over Amherst from the Baseball/Softball Complex.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The first four innings featured a pitchers' duel between Mammoth starter Nick Fassert and Panther hurler Chase Zidlicky with neither side manufacturing a rally.
- Amherst broke the scoreless streak in the top of the fifth inning. After the first three Mammoths reached base, J.J. Grimes knocked a run-scoring single through the left side. A batter later, Carson Ames pushed Zander Carnahan across on a base hit to first base for a 2-0 lead.
- The visitors loaded the bases again a frame later. Tyler McCord recorded the third run of the contest on a fielder's choice by Carnahan. Amherst tried to extend its lead, but Zidlicky tallied a pop-up to shortstop and consecutive strikeouts to quell the damage.
- Middlebury broke the hitless streak during the bottom half, as Henry Ayers recorded a base knock to right field. One out later, Sam Gersch brought home Ayers with a triple that landed just inside the right-field foul line and bounded all the way to the wall to make it 3-1.
- Samuel Kidd worked a one-out walk in the eighth, but Fassert tallied back-to-back strikeouts to keep the two-run advantage.
- After Christian Zebrowski tallied a 1-2-3 ninth on the mound, the Panthers made their move. Ayers and Joe Basso poked singles through the right side, while Gersch tallied a walk to load the bases. Anthony Pellagrini came up clutch, plating Ayers and pinch runner Pablo Spielman-Rodriguez on a single that dropped just inside the left-field foul line to knot the contest at 3-3.
- A pitch later, Brian Olson tried to check his swing and connected on a ball that trickled into center field. Gersch rounded third and sprinted home, as the throw from the outfield was not in time and Middlebury clinched the come-from-behind win.
NOTES
- Olson's walk-off hit is the first of his Panther career.
- Zebrowksi earned the victory on the hill, throwing three innings of no-hit baseball and striking out four Mammoths.
- Ayers logged his 11th multi-hit game of the campaign with a 2-for-4 performance and two runs scored.
- The sides met for the 79th time, with the Panthers claiming five of the last six battles.
Middlebury and Amherst conclude the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
