The Middlebury softball team plated 20 runs on 19 hits across a pair of victories (9-1 & 11-2) in Sunday's doubleheader against Plattsburgh State. Both contests were secured in six innings.
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- Kristyn Carroll led off the initial frame with a triple to dead center. Two batters later, McKenna Lont brought the first run across via an RBI groundout for an early 1-0 edge.
- The visitors answered the tally in the following inning. Allison Isaacs drew a walk before advancing to second and scoring on a seeing-eye single from Jaylyn Linderman to knot the contest at 1-1.
- The Panthers tacked on five runs in the bottom half. A Cardinal miscue plated the first run before Olivia Scholes and Jen Westphal knocked in Carroll and Lont with consecutive base hits. Reagan Adiletta belted a two-run double over the head of the Cardinal left fielder to establish the 6-1 score.
- Middlebury added two more in the sixth. Scholes legged out a leadoff single before a triple in the right field gap from Adiletta plated her from first. Entering from the dugout with two away, Sarah LaFond laced a ball to left center that brought Adiletta around to extend the lead to 8-1.
- Needing just one run to trigger the run rule with one gone in the sixth, Scholes blasted a round-tripper beyond the left-field fence for the 9-1 final score.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- Another strong second inning helped the Panthers nab the lead in game two. Lont drew a base on balls to open the frame before coming across on another run-scoring triple by Adiletta. Katelyn Mikros sent the ball out to left in her fourth collegiate at-bat before Uma Corcoran scampered home on a wild pitch to build a 4-0 lead.
- The visitors cut the margin to three (4-1) in the third. Linderman logged a one-out infield single before scoring from first when Meghan Stark doubled to left center.
- After two quiet innings, a sacrifice fly from Sara Isaacs plated the second Cardinal run in the sixth. Gwen Noll singled through the right side and took second on a wild pitch. She moved up on a groundout before Isaacs plated her with a ball sent to right field.
- The hosts walked it off again in the bottom half, tacking on seven runs to finalize the 11-2 win. LaFond answered the call once again with a pinch-hit RBI infield single and Carroll plated three with a double down the line. After an intentional walk was issued to Scholes, Westphal blasted a walk-off shot over the left field wall.
