Middlebury Downed By Emory In Series Finale 8-4

The Middlebury baseball team wrapped up a three-game weekend set against Emory on Sunday. The Eagles scored four times in the finale's first inning on their way to an 8-4 decision.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The hosts got on the board in their initial at-bat. Dalton Needle drew a free pass with the bases loaded before Zach Wasserlauf lifted a sacrifice fly to right. Corey Goldstick followed two batters later with a two-run single to left center, driving in Needle and Jonathan Lang to craft a 4-0 advantage.
  • The Panthers cut the deficit to 4-1 in the second. Will Ashley reached on an infield base hit and touched home on a triple to right from the bat of Andrew Glasscock.
  • Emory answered a frame later when Mitchell Smallwood ripped a two-out three-bagger and scored on a base knock through the left from Goldstick.
  • The 5-1 line held until the fifth when Wasserlauf walked and later raced home on a sacrifice fly. Jake Lawson made it a 7-1 contest with a bunt base hit to plate Smallwood.
  • Goldstick lifted another sac fly in the seventh to increase the Eagle edge to seven (8-1).
  • Middlebury sliced into the Emory lead with a pair of tallies in the eighth. Dominic DeMatteo reached on a throwing error and came across on a wild pitch later in the inning. Gus Parker drew a base on balls, stole second and raced around to touch the plate on a single up the middle from JD Collins.
  • Frederic Malek and Carter Chi opened the ninth with back-to-back walks and each advanced a base on a wild pitch. Malek brought home the fourth Panther run on a double play for the final 8-4 score.

NOTES

  • Collins collected a hit for the third-straight contest.
  • Glasscock's triple was his first in a Panther uniform.
  • The programs met for the 11th time.

Middlebury returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Norwich for a single game beginning at 3:00 p.m.
