Holding a narrow 4-3 lead, the Middlebury baseball team plated six runs in the fifth inning to pave the way for an 11-3 victory over Norwich on Tuesday.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Henry Ayers led off the bottom of the initial inning with a base knock to right field before nabbing second base on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Sam Gersch plated Ayers with an RBI groundout for the early 1-0 edge.
- The hosts extended their lead in the second. Consecutive doubles from Carter Chi and Cooper Bohlig preceded a single through the left side from Alexander Glasscock, opening a 3-0 margin through two frames.
- The Cadets applied pressure in the top of the third, loading the bases with a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a single through the right side to load the bases. Panther pitcher Jeremiah Murphy drew a groundout to strand all three Norwich runners and preserve the three-run advantage.
- A trio of walks helped the visitors load the bases in the fourth. With two away, Isaac Maldonado placed a base hit into center field to bring two runners across before a throwing error plated the tying run (3-3).
- Middlebury manufactured a prompt response in the bottom half. Brayden Mathews and Ayers logged back-to-back singles before Parker was plunked to load the bases. Gersch added his second RBI with a first-pitch sacrifice fly to left field to retake a 4-3 advantage.
- After a leadoff two-bagger from Andrew Baay in the fifth, Chi sent the first pitch he saw over the left-center wall to make it 8-3. Bohlig legged out an infield single and scored on consecutive Cadet miscues. Parker capped the surge with a three-run round-tripper later in the frame, establishing a 10-3 lead.
- Consecutive free passes paved the way for the 11th Panther run in the seventh. Gersch tallied a base knock in right field that plated Will Ashley from third.
