Trailing by four with 10:51 remaining in the second quarter, the Middlebury men's lacrosse team manufactured seven unanswered goals across 21 minutes of action to secure a 9-7 victory over Connecticut College on Saturday from Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Camels opened the scoring with 6:19 remaining in the first quarter. Matthew Sofarelli delivered a behind-the-cage feed to Liam Horkan, who found the right side of the net.
- Connecticut College cashed in another tally about four minutes later when Harrison Zmijewski fired a step-down shot to make it 2-0.
- With 1:10 left in the stanza, Nick Marvin scooped up a loose ball in front of the cage and snuck a shot past Camel goalie Patrick Hogan to cut the lead in half (2-1).
- Andrew Rainville added a goal for the visitors with 15 ticks remaining to establish a 3-1 score after 15 minutes.
- The Camels kept the momentum to open the second stanza. Horkan and Zmijewski tallied consecutive goals spanning 29 seconds to double the deficit (5-1) at the 4:09 mark.
- After a Panther timeout, Gavin Romweber found a trailing James Farinacci for a bid that sailed into the left side of the net with 9:04 to play in the half.
- Romweber joined the goal scorers nearly two minutes later, working around a screen from Will Ford and finding the top-left corner of the net with a screamer to make it 5-3.
- Middlebury tacked on another marker with 2:42 left in the session. Ford tucked a tough-angle shot inside the right panel for a 5-4 contest at the half.
- The Panthers held the momentum as four different players found nylon to grow the lead to 8-5 with 2:58 to go. Ged Gengras capped the spurt via a ripper from 20 yards out that sailed into the center of the net.
- Connecticut College found the back of the net twice in the final nine minutes, but John McCarthy interrupted the run and Middlebury played keep away to seal the come-from-behind triumph.
