Second-Quarter Surge Sends #18 Panthers Past Trinity 10-9

The #18 Middlebury men's lacrosse team outscored Trinity 6-2 in Saturday's second quarter and never gave the lead back as the Panthers held on for a 10-9 victory.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Bantams had the first chance with 12:28 remaining in the first quarter, as Miles Harvey darted in from the top of the zone. Middlebury goalie Hayden Kern quickly moved his stick and deflected it away.
  • Trinity took advantage of a Panther miscue with 3:39 remaining. Conley Bohan scooped up an errant pass and fired on an open net to make it 1-0.
  • Andrew Finn doubled the lead two minutes later, circling a Middlebury defender and finishing into the right panel.
  • The hosts made it 3-0 with 2:34 expired in the second stanza, as Jake Connors skipped a shot over Kern's shoulder.
  • Middlebury got on the board 1:59 later. John McCarthy collected possession and cut left before finding the right side of the net.
  • Bohan nearly made it 4-1 on a one-on-one opportunity against Kern at 9:35. The Panther goalie stood tall and denied the point-blank chance with the head of his stick.
  • Middlebury's offense found its form, as Ged Gengras, Cooper DeMallie and Misha Trupo found the scoresheet over nearly three minutes to take a 4-3 lead with 5:37 left. DeMallie's shot was the headliner, as his bid went through his legs and into the left panel.
  • Billy Gerne knotted the game at 4-4 at the 4:46 mark before Gavin Romweber and DeMallie combined for two goals to close out the half and make it 6-4.
  • Connors cut the lead to one with 1:58 expired in the second half on a shot that tucked inside the left post.
  • With 10:34 remaining, Nick Marvin found space in the Bantam defense and perfectly placed his attempt in the left panel to retake a two-goal advantage.
  • Harvey ripped a tough angle shot about two minutes later that smashed into the right side of the net for a 7-6 game.
  • The Bantams nearly knotted the game with one second left in the third quarter. Kern tracked Harvey's bid from 20 yards to keep the lead heading into the final 15 minutes.
  • Middlebury created some space to open the fourth, as Charlie O'Connor (14:31), McCarthy (12:24) and Marvin (8:24) recorded goals to build a 10-6 lead.
  • The hosts chipped away at the deficit. A riser into the right side of the net by Harvey with 7:37 remaining swelled into three consecutive markers for a 10-9 contest with 2:02 showing on the clock.
  • Trinity kept up the pressure with less than a minute to go, as Harvey collected possession and ripped a riser that banged off Kern's helmet and out of bounds.
  • The Bantams had the final opportunity with 39 ticks left, but a turnover allowed Kern to scoop the ball up and run out the clock for the one-goal win.

NOTES

  • Kern reset his career high with 16 saves in front of the net. He becomes the fourth Panther in program history to surpass 700 career stops.
  • DeMallie, Marvin and McCarthy each tallied two goals in the triumph.
  • Drew Dummer caused a team-high four turnovers.
  • The conference foes met for the 39th time, with Middlebury earning its 35th triumph in the series.

The Panthers close their two-game road weekend at #8 Babson on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
