Baseball Splits Saturday Twin Bill With Emory

The Middlebury baseball team split a doubleheader at Emory on Saturday in Georgia. The Panthers earned a 7-4 triumph in game one, while the Eagles tallied a thrilling 16-15 victory in 11 innings.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • The hosts grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as Jake Lawson scored on a Panther miscue and Mark Serdinak plated Zach Hanson with a sacrifice fly.
  • Emory looked to extend its lead during the home half of the second. With two outs, Adrien Armstrong singled through the right side. Lawson tried to score from second base, but Sam Gersch fired a perfect strike to Samuel Kidd for the 9-2 putout at the plate.
  • Middlebury struck back, grabbing a 4-2 advantage in the top of the third. Three  Panthers tallied a run batted in (RBI) in the inning, including a triple in the right-center field gap by Gus Parker that plated Will Ashley.
  • Jonathan Lang opened the home half with a double down the left-field line and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Christian Zebrowski shut down the scoring chance by inducing a flyout to left.
  • Emory trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the seventh. With runners on second and third, Armstrong knocked in Connor Tam with a sacrifice fly to left. The hosts had a chance to tie the contest, but Stefano Yozzo struck out Dalton Needle to maintain a one-run cushion.
  • The Eagles nearly tied the contest during the eighth, putting the run in scoring position with one out. Middlebury's defense clamped down, forcing consecutive fielder's choices.
  • The Panther offense provided some insurance in the top of the ninth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Carter Chi crossed the plate on a wild pitch before a clutch two-out single by Alexander Glasscock brought home Cooper Bohlig and Henry Ayers to make it 7-3.
  • Emory got one back on a sacrifice fly from Needle, but Yozzo stifled the comeback attempt with a strikeout and lineout to seal the 7-4 win.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • Middlebury jumped on the board first during its initial at-bat. With two outs, Ashley plated Andrew Baay with a double to left field. The visitors were not doneas Forrest Nelson drove in Ashley seeing-eye single for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Baay increased the advantage to 3-0 with an RBI baseknock through the left side an inning later.
  • Nick Sullo crossed the plate via a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the second.
  • The Panther offense continued to churn out runs, scoring four on two hits to make it a 7-1 advantage. Two of the four runners crossed the plate on wild pitches.
  • Emory made its move in the bottom half. A single up the middle by Mario Borges sparked seven runs, as the hosts grabbed an 8-7 lead. Jonathan Lang also had a base knock that plated two Eagles during the stretch.
  • Middlebury gained the advantage back a frame later. JD Collins, Brayden Mathews and Ayers tallied three singles in a row. Collins scored on Ayers' base knock. A batter later, Chi brought home Mathews with an RBI groundout to make it a 9-8 game.
  • Tam opened the bottom of the fifth with a single and came around to score on a wild pitch to knot the contest at nine.
  • Middlebury regained a 12-9 advantage with three runs in the sixthbefore Emory matched with  a trio for a 12-12 ballgame.
  • The Eagles gained a 15-12 lead in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Tam cleared the bases with a three-run single.
  • Collins cut the deficit to a pair an inning later via a roundtripper over the left field fence.
  • Middlebury tied the game at 15-15 in the ninth, headlined by an RBI double to left field from Brian Olson.
  • The Eagles put runners on first and second in the bottom half, but Dylan Knightly slammed the door shut with a swinging strikeoutto push the contest to extras.
  • Emory tallied the walk-off victory in the 11th, as Mitchell Smallwood knocked in Zach Wasserlauf with a single down the right-field line for the thrilling 16-15 victory.

NOTES

  • Baay, Collins and Olson each had three hits in the second contest.
  • Yozzo earned his sixth save in a Panther uniform, striking out three batters over three innings of work.
  • Zebrowski moved to 2-0 on the mound after logging four innings of one-hit baseball.
  • The programs played for the ninth and 10th meetings in the all-time series.

The sides wrap up their three-game series on Sunday with a single contest set for 9:30 a.m.
