The Middlebury women's track and field team concluded its spring break trip to California, securing placements inside the top five across numerous events at Friday's Mangrum Invitational. The meet was hosted by Cal State San Marcos and featured squads from all three NCAA divisions and unattached participants.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Lilly Wurtz logged a golden effort in the hammer throw, moving the implement 46.62 meters. Julia Tulimieri's top toss of 45.91m slotted third on the leaderboard.
- In the 800-meter run, Naomi Atwood beat California State University of San Bernardino's (CSUSB) Kai Marroquin by 0.19 seconds for a second-place clocking of 2:15.62. Annelise Jensen also finished inside the top five in fifth (2:17.31).
- Shea Fajen paved the Panther path in the 3,000 steeplechase, crossing the line at 11:02.15 to grab the runner-up spot. Grace Kaelber posted a time of 11:09.20 to take third.
- Emily Rubio tied with Cal Poly Pomona's Neshara Smith for second in the high jump. Both athletes cleared the 1.65m bar on their third attempt to share silver. Lily Haskins-Vaughan finished just behind her teammate in fourth (1.60m).
- During the 400 hurdles, Anna Mazur blazed to a clocking of 1:04.94 to lock down a third-place showing.
- MK Cestaro brought home bronze in the 1,500 run at 4:38.65.
- Claire Palmer rounded out the top-three finishers, enduring the grueling 10,000 for an effort of 36:09.65.
- In the shot put, Tulimieri led the Middlebury contingent with a 12.49-meter heave to claim fourth. Wurtz grabbed fifth place at 11.85m.
- The Panther quartet of Jazmyn Hurley, Mazur, Mary Elliot and Ella Pate combined to record fourth in the 4x400 relay (3:54.96).
- Pate clocked an effort of 57.42 seconds in the 400, good for fifth in the event. She narrowly overtook Orange Coast's Jasmin Trujillo by 0.11 seconds to land in the top five.
- Melissa White sprinted to a fifth-place outing in the 100 at 12.61 seconds.
- Lucy Pollitt soared 5.32m in the long jump to earn a top-five placing. Her distance tied for fourth best in the event.
NOTES
- Wurtz rewrote her personal best in the hammer throw by 2.26 meters.
- Fajen sliced 26.23 seconds off her high mark in the steeplechase.
- Cestaro's clocking in the 1,500 established a personal-best effort by 1.40 seconds.
- Pate trimmed 1.36 seconds off her top effort in the 400.
- Pollitt tallied a collegiate-best mark in the outdoor long jump by one-tenth of a meter.
The Panthers return east and prepare for the Amherst Spring Fling on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
