The Middlebury baseball team led by five runs early in Saturday's contest, but Colby surged late to earn a 7-6 win. The affair concluded the squad's slate at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers wasted no time moving in front. After reaching on an error, Aiden Han advanced to third on a double to center from Henry Ayers. Consecutive sacrifice flies from Sam Gersch and Anthony Pellagrini built a 2-0 Middlebury edge in the opening inning.
- The navy and white came back for more in the second. Brayden Mathews and Forrest Nelson went back-to-back with singles to put two runners on for Dominick DeMatteo, who plated Mathews with a base knock to left field. The Mules turned two in the ensuing at-bat, but Ayers blasted a roundtripper to right that extended the lead to 5-0.
- With two on and two down in the bottom half, Jeb Burkhart uncorked a hard-hit ball that cleared the left-field wall to trim the lead to a pair (5-3).
- Mathews picked up an RBI in the away half of the third, driving in Gus Parker from third to make it a three-run ballgame.
- The pitchers took the reins for the ensuing two frames, as the 6-3 score held until the bottom of the sixth. Tony Silva led off with a two-bagger to left and Will Burns followed with a double to right that scored his teammate. Burns went from second to home on a pair of passed balls, tightening the affair to 6-5.
- Colby took its first lead in the eighth. Silva commenced the stanza with a base hit before Burns reached on a Panther miscue. Myles Oo worked a walk to load the bases, setting the table for Max Diamond's pinch-hit RBI single through the left side. With two away later in the inning, Burkhart punched a base knock through the left side that scored Burns and pushed the Mules in front, 7-6.
- Middlebury got the game-tying run to second in the ninth, but Matt Mahoney shut the door with a swinging strikeout to finalize the decision.
NOTES
- Ayers picked up his first home run as a Panther.
- Mathews finished 3-for-3 with one walk, one RBI and a run scored.
- Emmet George surrendered one hit and fanned a season-high five batters across four innings of work.
- Middlebury owns a 26-16-1 advantage in the all-time series against Colby.
The Panthers return to Vermont for a Tuesday affair with Plattsburgh State beginning at 3:30 p.m.
