Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Registers Pair Of Seven-Inning Wins Over Colby

The Middlebury baseball team outhit Colby 21-9 over two contests to claim a doubleheader sweep on Friday in Florida. The Panthers grabbed a 4-1 decision in the opening contest before capping the two-game slate by a 15-0 fashion. Both contests lasted seven innings.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS

  • Joe Basso got Middlebury on the board in the bottom of the first inning, pushing Aiden Han across with a single through the left side.
  • The Mules looked to knot the contest in their next at-bats. A leadoff single by Myles Gythfeldt, followed by a double down the right field line from Myles Oo, put pressure on Panther pitcher Hank Lloyd. The rookie stood tall, using a pop-up to third base and consecutive swinging strikeouts to quell the opportunity.
  • Colby tied the game at 1-1 during the top of the third stanza when Patrick Shrake scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Gythfeldt.
  • Middlebury took the lead for good in the bottom half. With a pair of runners on and two outs, Anthony Pellagrini lifted the ball over the right-field fence to retake a 4-1 advantage.
  • The Panthers nearly gained some insurance in the sixth, as two hit-by-pitches and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Mule reliever Kyle Bourque got out of the jam on consecutive plays at the plate to keep the deficit at three.
  • In the top of the seventh, Colby brought the game-tying run to the plate, but Dylan Knightly induced a flyout to secure the save.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS

  • Carter Chi put the Panthers in front by a 2-0 margin to open the contest, blasting a two-run roundtripper over the right-field wall.
  • The Mules put two runners on in the second, but Middlebury starter Chase Zidlicky tallied a strikeout and back-to-back flyouts to escape the jam.
  • Chi continued his tear at the plate during the third stanza by plating Han on a double to center to make it 3-0. Middlebury was not done as Pellagrini blasted his second three-run homer of the doubleheader, extending the Panther advantage to 6-0.
  • The navy and white continued to manufacture runs two frames later, pushing four more across home plate for a 10-0 advantage. Andrew Baay highlighted the spurt with a two-run double to left field.
  • The Panthers tacked on five more runs down the stretch and reliever Owen McCandless cemented the shutout with a 1-2-3 performance.

NOTES

  • Lloyd excelled on the rubber in game one, striking out seven Mules and giving up just four hits over six innings.
  • Zidlicky allowed five baserunners over six frames of work to pick up his initial victory as a Panther.
  • Pellagrini drove in six runs over the two contests, while Ayers went a perfect 4-for-4 in the second game.
  • Chi blasted his team-leading third roundtripper of the campaign.
  • Middlebury picks up its 25th and 26th victories in the series and extends its winning streak over the Mules to 12 straight contests dating back to 2004.

The foes close out their spring break trip with a single battle on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
