The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team prevailed over eighth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer for the second time this spring, earning a 5-2 triumph on Wednesday in California.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers got out to a fast start, winning the first two doubles tilts. Elsie Van Wieren and Anna Lardner rolled to a 6-2 victory over Annique Varty and Sofia Kalyva at #1 before Ren Barton and Diya Pachamuthu earned a 6-3 decision in the #3 match to claim the initial point.
- Van Wieren and Barton maintained the momentum, each taking their singles bouts in straight sets. After claiming the opener in the top spot, Van Wieren conceded just one second-set game to Leticia Bazua Vazquez to secure the triumph (6-3, 6-1). Barton replicated the score in her win over Sofia Kalyva in the fourth position.
- The four remaining singles contests each required three frames to crown a victor. Meha Chaudhary (2-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Mireille Chedid-Daley (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) gave the hosts the #3 and #2 singles points, respectively, to tighten the battle (3-2).
- Charlotte McCann prevailed in the decisive fifth singles match, brushing off a setback in the opener by claiming consecutive tiebreakers in a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) decision.
- Elizabeth Doak used 7-5 wins in the first and third sessions to take the #6 match and finalize Middlebury's 5-2 outcome.
