Sixth-Ranked Panthers Battle With Top-Ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

The #6 Middlebury women's tennis team battled with top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, falling 6-1 to close its annual spring break trip.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Both teams jockeyed for the edge in doubles action. The Athenas' top duo of Lindsay Eisenman and Celestina Cedillo secured a 6-1 decision before Lulu Wu and Ananya Annapantula countered with the same result at #2.
  • Ren Barton and Diya Pachamuthu grinded out a 7-5 victory over Leah Baroudi and Bell Zhou in the third flight for a 1-0 advantage.
  • Celestina Cedillo knotted the contest at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the sixth position to commence singles.
  • Five high-intensity matches followed, with each going three frames. Charlotte McCann grabbed a 6-1 win during the opening set at #5 against Baroudi. The Athena responded with 6-2 and 6-3 results to push CMS ahead 2-1.
  • Switching to the top of the lineup, Elsie Van Wieren rallied from a 6-2 loss in the opening frame, grabbing a 6-4 decision to push her match to a decisive third. Eisenman secured a 6-1 result to put the Athenas in clinching territory. 
  • Ananya Sriniketh (6-1, 5-7, 6-3) and Rebecca Kong (2-6, 6-2, 7-5) put the match away with their marathon victories at #3 and #2, respectively.
  • Barton battled with Zhou in the fourth slot, as the sides split the first two sets by 6-2 and 7-5 scores. Zhou fed off the momentum and closed the match with a 6-3 decision for the 6-1 final score.

NOTES

  • The programs met for the 15th time.

The Panthers return to the East Coast and conference action against #20 Williams on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
