#15 Men’s Tennis Outlasts #17 Pomona-Pitzer 5-2

The #15 Middlebury men's tennis team claimed Wednesday's crucial doubles point and outlasted #17 Pomona-Pitzer during six exhilarating singles contests for a 5-2 triumph. Three of the singles flights went to a winner-take-all third set.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Sagehens took the opening doubles match when the tandem of Drew Goldman and Jay Mallampati tallied a 6-1 decision in the top spot against Julian Wu and Noah Lewis
  • The Panther pair of Andrew Yim and Hugh Hentschel posted a 6-3 decision over Sam English and Neil Chulani in the third slot. Middlebury's #2 pairing of Reif Larsen and Thehan Wijemanne earned a hard-fought 7-5 decision in the tiebreaker to secure the point. 
  • Hentschel opened individual action with a straight-set triumph (6-3, 6-1) at #5 against English. Wu followed with a 7-5, 6-4 decision against Goldman in the top flight for a 3-0 lead.
  • Pomona-Pitzer cut into the deficit when Rocca slipped past Lewis in the second slot by identical 6-3 tallies.
  • Wijemanne clinched the match for the navy and white, battling back after dropping the opener for a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over John Wehrle at #3.
  • In the fourth position, Larsen battled Tanner Ige in a match that went the distance. Ige claimed a 6-2 score in the opening frame before Larsen leveled the tally 7-5. The decisive stanza saw Ige post a 7-4 decision in the tiebreaker to make it a 4-2 contest.
  • Anand Sahasrabudhe completed the Panther scoring with an impressive 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(5) triumph over Zou at #6, giving the Panthers a thrilling 5-2 decision.
NOTES
  • Wu collected his ninth-straight singles triumph, while Sahasrabuhde and Hentschel extended their winning streaks to seven and six, respectively.
  • Wijemanne secured his 50th career doubles triumph and the 35th in singles play.
  • The Panthers start a season 8-0 for the second time in their last three campaigns. 
  • The programs squared off for the 16th time with Middlebury holding a 14-2 advantage in the series.
The Panthers return to the courts on Thursday for a match at #25 Redlands beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET.
