The #15 Middlebury men's tennis team enjoyed a strong showing in the penultimate match of its California trip, nabbing Thursday's doubles point before rattling off four consecutive wins during individual action to earn a 6-1 win over #25 University of Redlands.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Reif Larsen and Thehan Wijemanne pushed the Panthers ahead in the #2 doubles match, besting Sam Parsons and Cooper Whittington by a 6-2 score. Vitomir Petcov and MJ Abarca penned the Bulldog response with a 6-3 win in the top flight.
- In the decisive third pairing, Andrew Yim and Hugh Hentschel outlasted Mateen Ghafarshad and Jack Hinkle for a 7-5 victory to secure the initial point.
- Julian Wu was the first to prevail in singles play, highlighted by a clean second set at #1 against Petcov (6-3, 6-0). Larsen followed in the fourth flight, dispatching Hinkle in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) to increase Middlebury's lead to 3-0.
- Noah Lewis put the match away at #2, fending off Gustavo Marcanth with identical 6-4 tallies to secure the triumph. Wijemanne followed with a 6-4, 6-2 decision in the third position.
- After William Pullin grabbed the lone Redlands point at #6, Hentschel endured a battle with Ghafarshad in the fifth spot. The Panther claimed the opener by a 6-4 score before grinding out a 7-2 tiebreaker in the second frame to finalize the 6-1 team outcome.
