The sixth-ranked Middlebury women's tennis team opened its time on the West Coast on Monday with a pair of 7-0 sweeps. The Panthers topped Chapman in the morning's match, before blanking Division II Concordia University Irvine later in the day. With the two triumphs, the team secured its 500th win in program history.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. CHAPMAN
- The pair of Ananya Annapantula and Lulu Wu opened the match with a 6-1 win over Lucy Wallin and Chloe McBride in the second doubles slot. The visitors continued to ride the momentum at #1, as Elsie Van Wieren and Anna Lardner were triumphant by a 6-2 tally to secure the doubles point.
- Ren Barton and Charlotte McCann recorded a hard-fought 6-4 victory against Jaya Manhas and Sofiya Khegay in the third position to close doubles action.
- The navy and white swept the points during singles play. Van Wieren led off with a 6-1, 6-0 win over McBridge at #1 before Lardner made it 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 decision against Wallin in the second slot.
- Elizabeth Doak clinched the match in the sixth position, recording wins in 12 of the 13 games (6-0, 6-1). McCann tallied identical 6-2 set scores against Malina Dahms in the fifth spot to push the lead to 5-0.
- Wu (6-4, 6-2) and Barton (6-2, 6-3) concluded the matchup with triumphs at #3 and #4, respectively.
HIGHLIGHTS VS. CONCORDIA IRVINE
- Middlebury continued to roll into the afternoon's contest, claiming every doubles decision to nab the initial point. Barton and Annapantula cruised to a 6-0 win over Mianna Robinson and Kristyna Dvorakova in the third spot, before Wu and McCann recorded a win against Mikayla Avila and Ashley Aziz at #2.
- Van Wieren and Lardner surrendered just two games in the top position to secure a 6-2 victory.
- McCann breezed through her battle with Avila in the fourth slot to commence singles action (6-0, 6-0) before Wu was victorious at #3 (6-2, 6-2). Van Wieren clinched the milestone win with a 6-2, 6-3 tally against Johnson atop the lineup.
- Doak secured a straight-set decision of 6-0, 6-0 over Aziz at #5
- Lardner grinded out a win over Dvorakova in the longest match of the afternoon, grabbing a 6-3, 7-5 decision.
- Annapantula finalized the sweep, besting Robinson by 6-0 and 6-1 scores at #6 (6-0, 6-1).
NOTES
- Van Wieren secured her 40th career triumph during doubles action andposted her 35th singles victory in the win over Chapman.
- Chapman and Middlebury squared off for the fourth time, with the navy and white winning each contest. The Panthers have also wonall three meetings with Concordia Irvine.
- The contest against Chapman was the 750th in the program's history. Since achieving varsity status in 1971, the program has accumulated a 500-247-4 record.
Middlebury returns to action on Wednesday when it squares off with #7 Pomona-Pitzer. The first serve in the match is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET.
