Third-Period Flurry Finalizes Middlebury’s 5-2 Win Over Wesleyan

Knotted at 2-2 with under 10 minutes to play, the Middlebury men's ice hockey team rattled off three goals in 2:37 of action to finalize a 5-2 victory over Wesleyan on Saturday evening from Chip Kenyon '85 Arena.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Just 59 seconds into the matchup, Edward Moskowitz gathered the puck between the faceoff circles and glided toward the crease, flicking a bid that Wesleyan netminder Patrick McDevitt denied with his left pad.
  • The guests jumped in front with 15:12 left in the opening period. Andrew Haxton gathered possession behind the goal and found Troy Maldonado at the blue line. The Cardinal delivered a feed into the crease that Danny Markham redirected into the right side for the 1-0 lead.
  • Dimitri Tzaferis fired an attempt from the blue line that McDevitt guided away with his stick at the 5:44 mark.
  • With 17:27 expired, Mike Fritz cut toward the right post and settled the puck for Jack Marottolo, whose look ricocheted off the pipe and out of harm's way.
  • Landon Brownlee logged the final opportunity of the initial stanza, ripping a shot from near the boards that bounded off McDevitt's chest to hold the one-goal advantage through 20 minutes.
  • The hosts knotted the battle with 15:50 showing in the second. Tyler Wishart slid the puck right to an unmarked Mack, who sent an accurate feed to Reece Brednich on the left post for a tap-in.
  • With 4:20 remaining in the frame, Ethan Davidson pushed the puck left to Jon Groth for a bid that Andrew Heinze blocked with his body.
  • In the final seconds, Connor Sutherland sent a last-chance shot from the boards that Heinze nudged away with his right pad.
  • Mack pushed the Panthers in front 2:13 into the period, lifting a shot over McDevitt's right shoulder to establish a 2-1 edge.
  • Just over two minutes later, Wesleyan restored the tie. Ethan Davidson connected with Dylan Margel at the blue line, who snuck a knuckler into traffic that deflected off a skate and into the left side to set the 2-2 score.
  • Max Noll recorded a trio of point-blank bids at the 7:13 mark, with McDevitt nudging the first two chances away before covering the third with a glove.
  • Middlebury tallied its third marker with 9:42 to go and never looked back. Moskowitz delivered a dime to a darting Tzaferis, who tucked his first goal of the campaign past the goal line to move the Panthers in front 3-2.
  • Wishart (12:37) and James Schneid (12:55) added goals 18 seconds apart to secure the 5-2 victory.
NOTES
  • Wishart's three points are his most in a single game with the navy and white.
  • Brednich won 13 of his 16 faceoff attempts while adding his sixth marker of the year.
  • Heinze appeared in his 50th career contest.
  • The programs met for the second time this winter and the 64th overall matchup with the Panthers holding a 43-16-5 advantage.
Middlebury hosts its final home game of the regular season on Saturday, February 14 at 2:00 p.m. against Williams. The matchup also serves as the team's Hearts & Rivalries Game.
