Women’s Basketball Puts Up Strong Effort Against #8 Bowdoin

The Middlebury women's basketball team battled eighth-ranked Bowdoin for three quarters before the Polar Bears pulled away in the final frame for a 75-47 victory on Friday from Pepin Gymnasium.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
  • Deadlocked at 4-4, a basket from Sarah Chenette with 6:06 left in the first stanza gave the hosts a 6-4 edge.
  • Bowdoin rattled off a quick 8-2 spurt, capped by a three-point shot by Payton Collins, for a 12-6 advantage.
  • Middlebury sliced the deficit to four (17-13) on an old-fashioned three-point play from Islay Moore with 2:24 left.
  • The Polar Bears closed the stanza on an 8-2 run with five coming from Collins, making it a 23-15 score after 10 minutes.
  • Keeley Baglio got the scoring going for the Panthers with a pair of free throws to pull within six (23-17) on the opening possession in the second.
  • A three-point play by Abbie Quinn moved the visitors ahead by nine before Emma Kirck spun in a layup to make it a 26-19 contest.
  • Bowdoin rattled off six points in a row for a 15-point cushion (34-19) at the 5:54 mark.
  • The Panthers meticulously narrowed the gap using a driving layup from Gabby Stuart to make the score 39-28.
  • Middlebury tallied a 7-2 run with four from Chenette and a three-pointer by Calie Messina to slice the deficit to 41-35 with 2:44 expired in the third stanza.
  • Ahead 44-38 nearly three minutes later, Bowdoin reeled off 10-straight points for a 54-38 lead.
  • Margot Newman knocked down two charity tosses to close out the quarter, bringing the difference to 56-43.
  • Baglio muscled in a layup and cashed in the free throw, drawing the Panthers within 10 (56-46) with 8:17 remaining.
  • The Polar Bears slowly pulled away over the final minutes, easing to the 75-47 decision.  
NOTES
  • Chenette recorded a team-best 13 points, marking the ninth time this winter that the guard has eclipsed the double-digit plateau.
  • Brooke Collins collected a career-high four steals.
  • The programs squared off for the 46th matchup in the all-time series.
Middlebury concludes the regular-season home portion of its schedule when it hosts Colby at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The program will honor its senior class before the game.
