The Middlebury men's ice hockey team tallied four goals in the final period to salvage a 5-5 tie against Trinity on Friday from Chip Kenyon '85 Arena. The Bantams tallied the lone goal in the shootout to secure the extra point.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Trinity had the first shot on target with 18 seconds gone in the initial period. Jason Zaccari blasted a bid from the left faceoff circle that bounced off the chest of Panther goalie Andrew Heinze and out of harm's way.
- The Bantams had a two-on-one chance about a minute later. Connor Sedlak hustled to the crease before ripping a point-blank opportunity, but Heinze stood his ground and made the stop.
- The Panthers looked to get on the board at the 7:07 mark. Cole Semeniuk collected possession in the Trinity zone and sent the puck toward the left post. Bantam goalie Jack Fialkoff tracked the bid and slid to his right for the pad stop.
- Middlebury broke the seal with 6:48 to go in the stanza. After a Dante Palombo shot was saved, Edward Moskowitz collected the puck in the right corner and skated around the goal. The forward cut to the middle of the circles and ripped a one-timer that found the right side of the net.
- Trinity knotted the contest three minutes later. Ryan Panico flipped a shot from the right side of the crease that ricocheted off Heinze's chest and into the goal.
- With 12:02 showing in the second frame, Luc Malkhassian gathered the puck behind the opposition's goal and sent a feed to Palombo. The forward fired, but Fialkoff steered his point-blank attempt aside.
- Trinity grabbed a 2-1 edge with an extra skater at the 14:43 mark. Panico shifted to his right and lifted the puck over Heinze's right shoulder.
- The visitors were not done in the period, as Ryan Friedman (3:07) and Spencer Korona (1:32) stretched the lead to 4-1 with back-to-back tallies spanning 1:35.
- The sides traded goals in the opening minutes of the third period. Malkhassian tipped the puck into the net after a shot by Palombo with 32 ticks gone, before Weston Turner found the left side of the net at the 6:22 mark to push the lead back to three (5-2).
- Middlebury's comeback started with 8:34 remaining, as Reece Brednich smashed the puck inside the left post on a feed from Revy Mack for the third navy and white goal of the evening.
- At the 14:28 mark, the Panthers cashed in on the power play. Jack Silverman corralled the puck deep in the defensive zone and hustled up the ice. After getting tied up with a Bantam skater, the forward left it for a trailing Morehouse, who tattooed a cross-crease shot that found the right side of the net.
- The hosts yanked Heinze for an extra skater with 2:01 to go and tallied the game-tying marker four seconds later. After a faceoff win by Palombo, Landon Brownlee slid the puck underneath the pads of Devon Bobak.
- Neither side found the game-winner over the final 1:58, pushing the contest into overtime.
- Trinity held a 4-1 advantage in shots on target in the extra stanza, but Heinze and Bobak steered the five combined attempts aside as the foes went to a shootout.
- After both goalies stopped the initial bids in the best-of-three shootout, Korona poked the puck past the Panther netminder to put the Bantams ahead.
- Middlebury could not convert its final two chances as Trinity earned the 1-0 shootout victory.
