Panthers Drop Weekend Finale Against Tufts

The Middlebury volleyball team fell to Tufts in straight sets on Saturday afternoon inside Pepin Gymnasium.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Tied at three early in the lidlifter, Dylan Whisenant logged three service aces to spark a 5-0 spurt and give the Jumbos an 8-3 edge.
  • After splitting the next six points, the Panthers capitalized on four miscues amidst a 5-1 run that diced the deficit to 12-11.
  • Four different Tufts players tallied kills as the visitors grabbed four of the next five to rebuild a 16-12 lead.
  • Natalie Stanford whirred the navy and white into motion, finding the floor on three occasions to spark five unanswered tallies and give the Panthers a one-point edge (17-16).
  • The blue and brown tagged nine of the final 11 rallies to finalize a 25-19 win in the opener. Maiwenn Kamdje, Tessa Fergusson and Celina Savage each logged two successful swings in the stretch.
  • Trailing 6-5 in the second stanza, the Jumbos used kills from Emma Heckman and Kamdje to buoy a 6-0 surge and an 11-6 lead.
  • Neither side could pull away in the middle points, resulting in a 13-13 split before Tufts rattled off 11 of the next 17 points to boost ahead, 24-19. Fergusson recorded three accurate attacks, while Stanford and Molly MacDonald also found the floor three times.
  • Molly MacDonald and Molly Harrison joined forces for three successful swings and a service ace over the next four points, igniting a 4-0 run that forced a timeout from the visitors. Out of the break, Heckman buried an attack to help the blue and brown prevail, 25-23.
  • The sides jockeyed for position early, playing to a 9-9 tie through 18 points. Three Jumbos swung successfully to power a 9-2 surge and build an 18-11 lead.
  • Claire Castor tallied three kills over the final 12 points, helping the guests secure a 25-16 outcome and the sweep.

  • Chloe Cunniffe logged her third consecutive double-double and fifth of the season with 20 assists and 15 digs.
  • The squads lined up against one another for the 39th time, with Tufts owning a slim 20-19 edge in the all-time series.
Middlebury begins a six-match stretch away from Vermont, beginning on Saturday against Williams at 2:00 p.m.
