Late Push Not Enough as Volleyball Drops Five-Setter to #25 Babson

The Middlebury volleyball team pushed #25 Babson to the brink, but the Beavers pulled off a 3-2 victory on Friday night in Massachusetts. The contest opened the New England Challenge for both programs.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Beavers came out firing, building an 11-5 lead and prompting a Panther timeout. Angelina Holm led the charge with four kills.
  • Babson's advantage grew to nine (18-9) via a successful swing by Hailey Fouche before a four-point burst for the Panthers made the score 18-13.
  • The navy and white could not get any closer, as the hosts closed the opener with seven of the next nine points for a 25-15 win.
  • Middlebury flipped the script in the second frame. Consecutive kills by Natalie Stanford highlighted a 6-0 head start.
  • Babson rallied back. A successful swing from Holm and a service ace by Zoe Ackerman bookended 11 of the next 17 tallies to trim the Panther lead to 12-11.
  • The Panthers matched with an 11-6 lead of their own to rebuild the advantage to six (23-17) before back-to-back kills from Molly MacDonald and Molly Harrison clinched the 25-20 win.
  • Babson put its foot on the pedal in the third frame. Five different Beavers hit the floor to build an 18-7 lead.
  • Ailsa Munro capped the set win (25-13) with her ninth kill of the frame and pushed the green and white to a 2-1 advantage.
  • Both sides commenced the fourth stanza with a tug of war, splitting the first 22 points to stay deadlocked at 11-11. Lia Gonzalez paced Babson with two successful attacks, while Harrison, Eliza Lowe and Natalie Stanford combined for six kills.
  • The regional foes traded points until a swing by Harrison sparked a 6-2 bolt to build a 20-16 advantage.
  • Babson trimmed the deficit to one (21-20), but consecutive attacks from Stanford closed a 4-0 run to push the bout to a winner-take-all fifth set.
  • Knotted at 8-8 in the final stanza, Gonzalez sparked three points in a row to establish some breathing room (11-8).
  • Middlebury could not restore the momentum as Babson pulled away for the 15-9 set victory in a thrilling five-set marathon.

NOTES

  • Stanford (14) and Harrison (12) combined for 26 of the Panthers 44 kills in the match.
  • Chloe Cunniffe logged 30 assists.
  • Lowe tied her career high with five total blocks.
  • Middlebury and Babson met for the 12th time, with each team winning six matchups.

The Panthers return to the court for a two-match slate on Saturday at the New England Challenge against #7 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (11:00 a.m.) and Springfield (3:00 p.m.).
