Top-Ranked Trinity Hands Men’s Basketball Setback in Conference Opener

The Middlebury men's basketball team shot 54 percent from the field in the second half, but could not make up enough ground in a 79-62 loss to top-ranked Trinity on Friday inside Pepin Gymnasium. The contest was the NESCAC opener for both programs.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Panthers and Bantams battled in the opening minutes. Edward Witherington and Drew Lazarre led each side with six and five points, respectively, as Trinity held an 11-10 advantage with 13:15 remaining in the first half.
  • The visitors began to stretch their lead when a layup by Trevor MacDonald swelled into an 18-8 run spanning 6:24 for a nine-point cushion (29-18) at the 6:50 mark.
  • Middlebury tried to trim the deficit. A three-point field goal from Donovan Lee capped seven of 11 points to make it 36-27 with 1:58 on the clock.
  • Trinity widened its advantage immediately, ending the half with nine-consecutive points for a 45-27 lead at the break. Lazarre concluded the run with a three from just beyond half court.
  • The Panthers came out of the locker room energized. A driving layup by Kuba Cwalina was the final bucket in seven of the opening 11 points for the home team to make it 49-34 with 5:04 expired.
