The Middlebury men's basketball team shot 54 percent from the field in the second half, but could not make up enough ground in a 79-62 loss to top-ranked Trinity on Friday inside Pepin Gymnasium. The contest was the NESCAC opener for both programs.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers and Bantams battled in the opening minutes. Edward Witherington and Drew Lazarre led each side with six and five points, respectively, as Trinity held an 11-10 advantage with 13:15 remaining in the first half.
- The visitors began to stretch their lead when a layup by Trevor MacDonald swelled into an 18-8 run spanning 6:24 for a nine-point cushion (29-18) at the 6:50 mark.
- Middlebury tried to trim the deficit. A three-point field goal from Donovan Lee capped seven of 11 points to make it 36-27 with 1:58 on the clock.
- Trinity widened its advantage immediately, ending the half with nine-consecutive points for a 45-27 lead at the break. Lazarre concluded the run with a three from just beyond half court.
- The Panthers came out of the locker room energized. A driving layup by Kuba Cwalina was the final bucket in seven of the opening 11 points for the home team to make it 49-34 with 5:04 expired.
- The Bantams outpaced Middlebury 13-8 over the ensuing 4:37 to rebuild their lead to 20 (62-42) with 9:24 to go.
- The hosts countered with a 7-3 spurt, trimming the deficit to 65-49 at the 6:37 mark. Ian Murray sparked the run with a floating jumpshot.
- Trinity continued to keep the momentum, matching with a 7-3 run of its own to push the lead up to 74-54 with 3:11 to go. David Ayles led the charge with five points.
- Middlebury outpaced the guests 8-5 over the remaining stretch, but could not get any closer than 16, as the Bantams secured the 79-62 win
NOTES
- Murray led the Panther contingent with 18 points, marking his eighth double-digit output on the season.
- Witherington was the other Middlebury player in double figures, tallying 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting alongside a team-high five rebounds.
- The Panthers' 47.1 percent from the field is the highest that the Bantams have surrendered to an opponent this season.
- Middlebury and Trinity battled for the 74th time.
The Panthers close their NESCAC opening weekend when they host Wesleyan on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
