Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Offensive Power Pushes #4 Panthers to Victory Over Suffolk

The #4 Middlebury women's ice hockey team used five goals in the third period to cruise to a 7-0 win over Suffolk on Tuesday evening from Chip Kenyon '85 Arena. The seven goals mark a single-game season high for the Panthers.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sasha Weiner ripped a shot between the faceoff circles with 15:59 remaining in the opening period. Suffolk goalie Lucy Cantin snagged the shot to secure the stop.
  • The Rams manufactured a chance at the 4:39 mark. Bella Schmidt fired a chance from the left side of the blue line. Middlebury netminder Lauren Sobczak read the shot and smothered the riser.
  • Britt Nawrocki nearly put the hosts in front on a power play with 9:41 left, parking herself near the crease and blasting consecutive backhand bids that Cantin stonewalled.
  • The Panthers grabbed a 1-0 lead with 5:14 remaining in the opening stanza. Liv Fernandez won possession on the boards and flipped the puck to Emma Hannah. The defender sent the puck to Trinity Walsh, who made a nifty move and deposited it in the back of the net.
  • Middlebury added to its advantage at the 17:52 mark. Avery McInerny had a shot from in between the faceoff circles redirected by Peyton Kennedy into the left side of the net for a 2-0 edge.
  • Laurel Potter nearly cut the lead in half with 3:06 expired in the second stanza, but Sobczak steered aside her shot from the right faceoff dot.
  • At the 4:23 mark, Walsh wound up and sliced a bid toward the left post. Cantin slid to her left for the blocker save.
  • The visitors earned a power play with 9:53 remaining and nearly capitalized. Cassie Borowski fired a riser from the point that Sobczak smothered.
  • Middlebury peppered Cantin with shots from Rachel Neyman (18:16) and Sarah Anthony (18:22), but the netminder denied the looks to keep it a two-goal game heading into the final period.
  • The hosts opened the third stanza with a bang at the 2:58 mark. Kate Flynn rang her bid off the pipe and down to the left side of the crease. Olivia Gordon won the scrum to the puck and tucked it in to make it 3-0.
  • Middlebury added to its lead 39 seconds later. Olivia McManus fired a shot from just inside the blue line that ricocheted off the stick of Zoe Pincelli and toward the left post. The puck bounced off Cantin's blocker and to the waiting stick of Walsh, who buried it in the left side of the net for a 4-0 score.
  • The hosts tallied three more goals off the sticks of Pincelli (3:55), Caroline Thomas (8:49) and Flynn (19:34) to seal the victory.
