Women’s Basketball Controls Tempo in 69-44 Win Over Emerson

The Middlebury women's basketball team outscored Emerson 42-17 across the second and third quarters en route to a 69-44 win on Tuesday evening from Pepin Gymnasium.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Sarah Chenette spearheaded a 9-2 start for the Panthers with four points before Islay Moore used a three-point make to cap the run with 2:51 elapsed.
  • Bri Fongillo helped the Lions answer with six of the ensuing eight points, contributing four tallies to cut the lead to three (11-8) at the 6:14 mark.
  • After a Chenette layup, the visitors closed the session with six unanswered points to nab a 14-13 edge through 10 minutes.
  • The sides traded baskets until a 17-0 Middlebury surge across 7:19 of play pushed the hosts to a commanding 34-18 lead. Keeley Baglio led all Panther scorers in the stretch with five.
  • Fongillo connected on a jumper with two ticks left, cutting the lead to 14 (34-20) at the break.
  • After a 5-4 Emerson sequence, the Panthers embarked on another seven-minute surge. Middlebury crafted a 17-4 run spanning nearly the remainder of the quarter, headlined by six points from Baglio, to craft a 55-29 lead with 9:22 gone in the third.
  • Kaylin O'Meara converted a layup with under a minute to go. The bucket sparked nine of the next 12 points as the guests shrank the lead to 20 (58-38) with 7:12 remaining.
  • Teagan Lind dropped six points over the final five minutes, helping her side outpace the Lions 11-6 and secure the 69-44 triumph.
NOTES
  • Chenette posted a game-high 16 points in her sixth outing in double figures this season.
  • Baglio contributed 11 points and made four of her five looks from the floor.
  • Moore added seven points and eight boards while blocking three shots for the second consecutive game.
  • The Panthers secured 44 rebounds as a team, marking the sixth time in the last seven games the team has grabbed 40 or more boards.
  • The institutions met for just the second time in women's basketball. The other matchup came during the 2017-18 campaign, an 80-55 triumph for the navy and white in the Emerson Tipoff Classic.
