Trailing by four with 7:29 remaining, the Middlebury women's basketball team tallied seven-consecutive points to take a lead it did not give back in a 62-51 victory on Saturday over Williams.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The pendulum of momentum swung both ways to open the game, as the contest was knotted at 8-8 with 2:19 remaining in the first quarter.
- Grace Augustine led the charge for the Ephs as the stanza ran down, tallying four points as part of a 6-3 spurt to make it 14-11 after 10 minutes of action.
- Middlebury came out firing in the second frame, converting its first three buckets to tie the game at 17 apiece at the 8:01 mark.
- The Ephs took the momentum back. A Logan Coster layup swelled into 11 of the next 14 points for the hosts to build a 28-20 advantage with 2:44 remaining.
- Catherine Carrafiello trimmed the deficit to four with back-to-back buckets before a three-point play with 12 seconds left from Micah Walton made it a 31-25 game at the half.
- The visitors flipped the script in the third stanza. Islay Moore led the charge with six points as part of a 12-4 run spanning 3:30 to take a 37-35 edge.
- Both sides struggled to find the bottom of the cylinder thereafter, as the squads were knotted at 39 heading into the fourth.
- Kathleen Smith recorded consecutive buckets as part of a 6-2 run to open the final quarter and build a 45-41 lead with 7:29 remaining.
- Middlebury reset and countered back as a three-pointer by Molly Keaveney sparked 11 of the next 15 points to make it 52-49 with 3:23 showing on the clock.
- The Panthers kept their foot on the gas pedal in crunch time, finishing the contest on a 10-2 run to seal the 62-51 victory.
NOTES
- Moore led the charge with 16 points, while Carrafiello netted a career-high 14 on 7-of-8 shooting. The duo combined for nine rebounds and two steals.
- Calie Messina reset her collegiate-best rebound total in the navy and white with 10 alongside six points.
- Middlebury held the Ephs to one three-point field goal and owned a 39-29 advantage in rebounds.
- The sides met for the 63rd time, with the navy and white winning each of the last three contests.
