Camels Pull Ahead Late in 57-48 Defeat For Women’s Basketball

The Middlebury women's basketball team dropped a 57-48 decision against Connecticut College on Friday from Pepin Gymnasium.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • The teams traded buckets across the early minutes, with Hayle Thompson sinking a layup to give the Camels a 9-7 edge through the opening 5:04 of action.
  • The Panthers netted six of the quarter's final seven points, led by four tallies from Calie Messina, to take a 13-10 lead at the end of the first stanza.
  • A Sofia Tavarez free throw, followed by a Mia Xerras jumper, knotted the battle at 13-13 with 8:30 remaining in the half.
  • Sarah Chenette and Islay Moore joined forces to outscore Connecticut College 7-2 over the next five minutes to build a 20-15 advantage at the  2:41 mark.
  • An even 9-9 split of the final 18 points established a 29-24 Middlebury edge at the break. Valeria Santiago Dedos powered the Camels with six, while Chenette led the Panthers with four.
  • Xerras connected from beyond the arc to begin the third quarter, but the hosts responded by notching seven-straight points to increase the margin to nine (36-27) at the 3:23 mark.
  • The visitors grabbed the momentum with a 15-2 surge spanning just over five minutes. Addi Hunter capped the run with a pull-up jumper that pushed Connecticut College ahead by four (42-38) with 1:19 remaining.
  • Moore and Chenette each contributed three points in the final 44 seconds of the third, trimming the deficit to 45-44 through 30 minutes.
  • Tavarez and Santiago Dedos provided seven points to power an 8-0 run that carried through 4:22 of the final frame, with the former sinking a layup to increase the lead to nine (53-44) and prompt a Middlebury timeout.
  • Xerras netted four late points to help the Camels secure the 57-48 decision.
NOTES
  • Chenette tallied a team-high 14 points, marking her ninth double-digit scoring effort in her last 12 outings.
  • Friday's contest marked the 33rd installment in the all-time series with the Panthers owning a 25-8 lead.
Middlebury concludes its initial home NESCAC weekend against Tufts on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
