The #9 Middlebury men's soccer team used goals from Keegan Harder and Ari Klayman to secure a 2-0 victory over St. Lawrence on Tuesday at South Street Field. The matchup was the first for both programs since the 2006 NCAA Regional hosted by the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Middlebury looked to get on the board with 4:36 elapsed. Will Sawin dribbled the ball on the endline and sent a centering pass towards the box. Anderson Gardner got his head on it, but Saints goalie Zach Amato made the stop.
- Gardner tried his luck again at the 13:20 mark. The Panther worked the ball into the box and fired a shot towards the bottom left corner. Amato read the bid and deflected it away with his left glove.
- With 13:56 gone by, Middlebury cashed in. Amato deflected a corner by Dylan Payne into the center of the penalty box. Keegan Harder won the race to the ball and tucked his shot under the crossbar for a 1-0 edge.
- At the 17:10 mark, St. Lawrence's Jeremy Ogango fired a shot from just outside the penalty box. Goalie Joey Waterman tracked the ball and knocked it away before it got to the right post.
- The Panthers looked for another marker in the 51st minute. Will Sawin crashed and struck a bid that was tracking towards the top left corner. Ogango stuck his foot out at the last second and blocked the shot away from the goal.
- The Saints nearly struck with 62:48 elapsed. Dennis Argueta raced down the left side of the field and caught up to a bouncing ball. With pressure to his right, the midfielder let the ball bounce and fired, but the shot went wide of the post.
- In the 74th minute, Pablo Gonzalez sent a screaming header that sailed just over the crossbar.
- Ari Klayman added the final goal of the evening at the 83:40 mark, finding the lower left corner of the net off a perfectly-timed back pass from Antonio Cosentino to seal the 2-0 win.
NOTES
- Harder and Klayman tallied their second and first goal of the season, respectively.
- Waterman grabbed his 14th shutout in a Panthers uniform.
- The programs met for the 14th time with Middlebury holding a 10-3-1 lead in the all-time series. It was the first regular-season meeting between the programs since a 2-1 victory for the Panthers in 1993.
Middlebury hits the road for NESCAC action this weekend against Trinity on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
