Horwitz’s Late Marker Pushes #9 Panthers to 1-0 Triumph Over #25 Trinity

Hugo Horwitz was the hero for the ninth-ranked Middlebury men's soccer team on Saturday in Connecticut, tallying a goal in the 74th minute to secure a 1-0 victory over #25 Trinity.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trinity opened the contest with back-to-back bids in the fourth minute. Kieran McCabe worked his way into the box and had his initial shot blocked. The forward collected the loose ball and whipped a pass to Boden Rupprecht for an attempt that went wide of the left post.
  • The Panthers looked to score with 6:10 elapsed. Eduardo Casanova sent a touch pass to Dylan Payne. The rookie was called offside after his shot went into the upper right corner of the net.
  • Middlebury nearly tallied the first goal at the 14:48 mark. Joey Waterman threw a perfectly timed ball to Gavin Randolph, who raced up the right sideline. The Panther sailed by his defender and sent a cross to a wide-open Keagan Harder, but the forward's bid slammed off the middle of the crossbar.
  • In the 33rd minute, Casanova sent in a solid corner that sailed towards the right post. Charlie Johnson headed a shot towards the bottom right corner that was punched aside by Bantams goalie Nate Dyott.
  • The Panthers nearly struck in the 66th minute. Will Sawin collected the ball in the penalty box and flicked a shot with his right foot that hit Dyott's midsection. Antonio Cosentino raced to the ball and lifted the rebound over the top left corner of the goal.
  • Middlebury broke the tie with 16:34 remaining off a corner kick. Casanova sailed the ball towards the left post. Sawin read the corner perfectly, flicking the ball towards the bottom right, where a Trinity defender deflected it away. Horwitz fired a rebound that bounced into the top left corner to give the Panthers a 1-0 edge.
  • Sawin nearly doubled the lead about 11 minutes later off a free kick that sailed wide of the right post.
  • Jordan McCammon launched a bid from 40 yards out with 85:31 elapsed, but Waterman saw the strike the entire way and smothered the chance to tally the shutout.

NOTES

  • Horwitz knocked in his second marker of the season.
  • Waterman earned the shutout with five saves in net.
  • Middlebury is now 11-0-3 in its last 14 contests against Trinity dating back to 2012.

The Panthers return to South Street Field for their alumni match next Saturday, hosting #20 Amherst at 2:00 p.m. The contest is a rematch of the 2024 national semifinal.
