After conceding the opening goal, the #10 Middlebury women's soccer team netted a pair of first-half markers to secure a 2-1 triumph over #21 Wesleyan on Sunday at the Allan Dragone Track and Field Complex.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Wesleyan etched the first tally in the 13th minute. Rachel Katz delivered a strike from the corner that Waverly Meyers headed into the top left corner for the early 1-0 edge.
- The Panthers answered less than two minutes later. Olivia Colby sent a sharp pass through to Carolina Espinosa, who buried a bending bid into the left netting from 18 yards out to tie the match.
- Middlebury added a second marker with 23:53 expired. Kacy Walker delivered a cross to Fiona Linnau in the box. The Panther got her head to the ball and guided it into the upper right corner to build a 2-1 advantage.
- Linnau nearly netted her second score at the 33:43 mark off a feed by Sarah Hall that sailed over the crossbar.
- The Cardinals earned their final chance of the starting session in the 42nd minute. Maria Utz won the ball in Wesleyan's defensive end and took it the length of the field before lifting a bid towards the left side of the goal that Middlebury goalie Livia Davidson smothered.
- Meredith Feiner gained possession at the midfield line with 57:05 elapsed and worked to the left side of the penalty box, aiming inside the left post. Davidson slid to her right to deny the chance.
- After a Panther corner with 20:40 remaining, Mia Feldman settled the ball at the top of the box and fired. Cardinals goalie Molly Brumbach stepped to her right and gloved the bid to maintain the margin.
- Wesleyan tacked on two more opportunities in the final minutes. Amidst a crowded box, Meyers elevated to direct a corner towards the left post in the 87th minute. The shot went wide left of the post.
- Davidson faced the final test 40 seconds later when Juliette Sullivan aimed from 20 yards out. She answered the call, making the stop to finalize the 2-1 win.
