The ninth-ranked Middlebury women's soccer team battled after falling behind 2-0, but ultimately fell to Bowdoin by a 2-1 score on Saturday afternoon at the Allan Dragone Track and Field Complex.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The visitors grabbed the advantage with 17:56 expired. Kayley Huleatt sent a centered free kick from just outside the penalty box and tucked it into the upper-right 90 to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.
- The Polar Bears eyed a second tally in the 28th minute. A rapid build-up found Sofi Rua unmarked from 20 yards out, but her bid sailed high over the crossbar.
- Kacy Walker delivered a sharp attempt to the lower left corner with 15:29 remaining in the half. Bowdoin goalie Charlotte Iannone slid to her right and made the stop.
- With 31:52 elapsed, Taya McClennen fired a shot from 25 yards out that clanged off the top of the crossbar.
- Carolina Espinosa nearly put the Panthers on the board in the 48th minute. She weaved her way through three Polar Bears, sending a bid from the left edge of the box that narrowly avoided Iannone's outstretched glove and deflected off the right post.
- With 34:25 left, Bowdoin's Mary Rainey paced a run from Jackie Shores into the box as she broke past the Middlebury back line. Shores slid to push the ball towards the goal, but Panther goalie Livia Davidson came off her line to secure the save.
- Middlebury put together two strong opportunities three minutes apart. At 54:13, Walker had a header towards the bottom-right that Iannone turned away. Espinosa nearly cashed in on a give-and-go on the Panthers' next offensive possession, tapping the ball through her defender's legs and having a try on the bottom-left corner that Iannone stopped as well.
- In the 68th minute, Jackie Shores delivered a ball from near the corner that deflected off a Panther and into the middle of the goal to give Bowdoin a 2-0 advantage.
- The hosts amped up the pressure late. After a bid from Gigi Day missed to the left, Chloe Swindle aimed a header toward the upper middle that Iannone denied with 14:49 left.
- Middlebury broke through with 76:12 elapsed. Day flicked a free kick back to Stella Espinasse for a sharp ball into the box that Roshann Purcell tapped into the left netting, cutting the margin to 2-1.
- The Panthers tallied two shots in the final 10:30, but could not place either on goal as the Polar Bears escaped with the 2-1 decision.
