Women’s Soccer Cruises Past Plymouth State

The Middlebury women's soccer team tallied a trio of first-half goals to cruise to a 7-0 triumph over Plymouth State in its season opener on Tuesday afternoon. The result marks the 11th-consecutive victory to begin a campaign for the Panthers.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Middlebury looked to get on the board with 2:11 elapsed. Chloe Swindle sent a shot towards the lower right corner, but Plymouth State goaltender Christa Giansiracusa made the stop to keep the score level.
  • The visitors struck first at the 25:36 mark. Gigi Day was taken down in the eight-yard box, calling for a penalty shot. Day stepped up and buried her bid into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0.
  • Middlebury tacked on a second goal less than six minutes later. Swindle sent a feed towards the goalie box, before Lauren Tracey won the race to the loose ball and tucked it into the goal for a 2-0 edge.
  • Suzanna Fee added the third tally of the contest right before the first half whistle. Olivia Irwin-Pokorny sent a through pass to Lila Savage, who flipped it towards the middle of the goal box. Fee won the race to the ball and placed it past two defenders.
  • Plymouth State had a great chance off a corner kick at the 45:57 mark. Middlebury's defense cleared the ball out of the box to keep the three-tally cushion.
  • The visitors extended the lead to 4-0 at the 58:40 mark off a shot by Emmy Christopher that snuck into the lower right corner.
  • Mari Rode (63:58), Tracey (70:44) and Olivia Colby (89:13) closed out the score sheet with second-half tallies to seal the 7-0 victory.

NOTES

  • Day's successful penalty kick is the first for Middlebury since 2023.
  • Colby, Fee, Rode and Savage tallied their initial goals in a Panther uniform.
  • The program's 14 shots on target are the most in a season opener since having 22 in its 2023 lidlifter against Plattsburgh State.
  • Middlebury and Plymouth State met for the 12th time with the Panthers earning their sixth victory in the series.

Middlebury opens NESCAC action on the road against Hamilton on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
