#13 Women’s Soccer Grinds Out 1-0 Road Victory Over #23 Vassar

The #13 Middlebury women's soccer team scored in the 57th minute and held #23 Vassar to just two shots on goal in a 1-0 triumph on Sunday from the Empire State. 

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Emmy Christopher had the first chance with 10:59 elapsed on a shot from the left side of the box. The ball sailed towards the right post, but a Brewers defender deflected the chance away.
  • Just 17 seconds later, Taya McClennen drove into the box and lifted a right-foot strike that sailed over the crossbar.
  • Vassar tallied its first shot of the contest with 13:11 remaining in the first half. Gianna Panarelli blasted a bid from 30 yards out that was scooped up by goalie Frankie Marston.
  • In the 38th minute, the hosts nearly scored via a corner kick. Ava Holman got a piece of the ball, bouncing it towards the goal line. A Panther defender bounced the ball off her chest and cleared it away for the defensive save.
  • Kjersti Moritz tried her luck at the 41:27 mark, but her shot was smothered by Brewers goaltender Laura Shea.
  • In the 51st minute, Panarelli fired a shot that sailed just over the crossbar.
  • With 56:34 elapsed, Middlebury took the lead. Mari Rode had her initial shot blocked towards the top of the box. The defender collected possession and passed back to Mia Feldman for a perfectly-timed strike that sailed into the top left corner for a 1-0 edge.
  • Vassar pushed the envelope late in the contest. At the 89:14 mark, Caroline Sheehan blasted a bid that sailed over the goal.
  • Middlebury played keep away for the last 46 seconds to seal the victory.

NOTES

  • Feldman added her third game-winner in a Panthers uniform.
  • In goal, Frankie Marston tallied one save to secure her first solo shutout of the season.
  • The Panthers and Brewers met for the first time in the sport of women's soccer.

Middlebury begins a two-match homestand against Union on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. from the Allan Dragone Track & Field Complex.
